Problem Statement: "Can we leverage technology and AI to prevent crime before it even begins?"
My role - User Research, UI Design, Prototyping, Usability testing
Team - 1 UX, 1 Product Manager, 3 Developers
Timeline - 6 Months
Client - Law Enforcement Agencies
Overview
While our previous tools focused on traditional law enforcement methods, a critical need emerged for a software application to address the growing importance of social media in crime prevention. In this case study, I took on the challenge of designing a SaaS solution that analyzes social media data to detect potential criminal activity, offering law enforcement a proactive tool to prevent crime before it starts.
How might we develop a user-centric software solution that leverages social media data to identify potential criminal activities, enabling law enforcement to take preventive action and ultimately enhance public safety?
Approach
I began by mapping out the core issues the business sought to address, ensuring they aligned with our goal of enhancing social media monitoring. This led to a thorough process of empathy mapping to deeply understand user challenges, followed by competitive analysis to pinpoint market gaps. Armed with these insights, I designed and developed an MVP (Minimum Viable Product) for the Socio app. This MVP allowed us to gather user feedback iteratively, refining wireframes and features to ensure the app effectively met user needs and stood out in the market.
Mapping the Journey: Empathy, Analysis, and MVP Creation
Design plan context
For our MVP, we chose Twitter to extract data due to its nature of facilitating public opinions, making it ideal for understanding public sentiment. While Facebook offers insights, it doesn't allow data access, and YouTube comments were beyond our budget. Focusing on Twitter allowed us to launch a cost-effective, 0-1 product. Future iterations will expand to news feeds and YouTube, but for now, Twitter data meets our immediate needs and goals

User Research
My objective in conducting user research for a social media analyzer tool was to gain insights into the needs, preferences, and expectations of potential users. This research helped me design and develop a tool that effectively addresses their requirements and provides a seamless user experience.
Stakeholder Interviews (Focus group discussion)
Qualitative research focuses on understanding user experiences and needs through in-depth methods like interviews and focus groups. I chose this approach for designing the Socio platform to gain detailed insights from law enforcement agencies, ensuring the tool is user-friendly and effectively addresses their specific challenges and requirements.
Discussion Highlights
Emphasis was placed on the importance of sentiment analysis to detect shifts in public mood that could indicate potential unrest or criminal activity
Agencies highlighted Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram as particularly valuable due to their high user engagement and real-time information flow
Agencies discussed the importance of transparency and accountability in their monitoring practices, including regular audits and oversight
Continuous training programs for staff were deemed essential to keep up with evolving technologies and methodologies in social media monitoring
Agencies stressed the importance of real-time alerts and a robust communication system to facilitate swift action
