Stylized Wooden Barrels — Game-Ready Prop

A stylized wooden barrel built to populate fantasy and adventure environments — taverns, dungeons, warehouses, and dockside scenes. Designed to hold up both as a standalone prop and when duplicated across a scene.

The Brief

The goal was to create a lightweight, performance-friendly prop that still feels hand-crafted — full PBR compatibility with a stylized, painterly finish, optimized for a direct drop into Unity.

Specs

— 3,280 triangles — 2K textures (Base Color, Normal, ORM/Mask) — Game-ready topology, no wasted geometry on hidden faces — Compatible with Unity URP / Built-in RP out of the box

Process

Modeling started with a blockout in Blender, focused on getting a readable silhouette from multiple viewing angles. From there, the mesh was retopologized to hit the polygon budget while preserving detail on the rivets and metal bands that read clearly in close-up shots.

Base Color

Texturing was done in Substance Painter using a stylized PBR approach — clean, saturated base colors with simplified surface information. Wood grain, wear on the metal bands, and edge damage were built through smart materials and generators, then art-directed to keep the read graphic and game-friendly.

Texture Map Breakdown

A side-by-side comparison of the core PBR texture set — Base Color, Roughness, Normal Map, and Ambient Occlusion — all baked and painted at 2K resolution. Keeping these maps clean and well-separated ensures the barrel reads correctly under any lighting setup once dropped into the engine.

Final Render

The final render was put together in Blender (Cycles), with lighting set up to emphasize the volume of the rivets and the texture detail in the wood grain.

Result

A stylized PBR barrel with a clean, game-ready texture set — optimized topology, clear material separation, and a graphic read that holds up whether it's placed as a single prop or duplicated across a scene. Ready to drop straight into a Unity project.
