Welcome to round 2 of the Google UX Design Professional Certificate program. Your challenge: to create a responsive website. For those non-UX design nerds, responsive web design refers to designing a website to adapt to many devices. Every wonder why a website might look different on your phone than it does on your desktop? It's because of responsive web design.
As always, we were given a list of prompts to choose from, and I decided to go with a ticket booking interface for a retro movie theatre. I consider myself a film buff, and I won't lie, I was excited to put all my favourite movies on this site as showings.

Understanding our users

User research

I conducted both primary and secondary research to understand my users. As for my primary research, I conducted empathy interviews amongst my peers to learn about their experiences purchasing movie tickets online.
For my secondary research, I looked in to online reviews about my competitors websites and mobile applications.

The problem

Persona

Designing the interface

Golden Reels was designed exactly like a standard cinema ticket booking interface, where users could users book tickets for movies, and also for special events (for example, Sci-Fi Nights). Many of my competitors had advertised these events, and I decided to include them in my website as well. I felt that they would help communicate my message, which was to celebrate the history of film.
I took a desktop-first approach to my designs. Almost all the elements are similar between the two interfaces, with the exception of the homepage, which was consolidated to a few navigation buttons, and the hamburger menu which replaced the desktop navigation bar.

Usability testing

I conducted two usability studies, one with my low-fidelity prototype (pictured above), and another with my high-fidelity prototype (pictured below under "Refining my designs").

Findings

Below is a list of consolidated findings from both usability studies.
