What if the everyday objects that shaped us became monuments to our heritage? A self-initiated LEGO® campaign concept celebrating South African identity, collective memory and the beauty of ordinary things through art direction, storytelling and design.
Built From Our Stories
AUDIENCE RESPONSE
Built From Our Stories became my highest-performing creative project on LinkedIn to date, generating an enthusiastic response and conversations around South African identity, nostalgia and the possibilities of bringing the concept to life.
Beyond the appreciation for the visual executions, the response revealed something particularly meaningful: people recognised their own experiences in the work. From the familiar plastic chair to the enamel mug, the objects became starting points for conversations about memory, belonging and the things that connect us.
The reception reinforced the central insight behind the campaign: sometimes the strongest cultural storytelling begins with what we already know.
A speculative Heritage Day campaign concept exploring South African memory, culture and everyday life through the language of the brick.
South Africa isn't one story. It's millions of them, built side by side. For Heritage Day, I wanted to explore the objects that rarely make it into traditional ideas of “heritage” but somehow carry an extraordinary amount of memory.
A plastic chair.
A washing line.
A potjie.
An enamel mug.
A wash basin.
A radio.
A taxi.
Objects we recognise before they need to be explained. Rather than illustrating heritage through a single culture, language or tradition, the campaign looks at the shared objects, rituals and experiences that exist between them. Different pieces. Different stories. One country continuously building itself.
