Alia lingua is a project that aims to help people learn to read in a new language. Alia lingua's primary target users include immigrants and young adults that wants to learn a second language. The platform focuses on reading skills primary.
My rol: Solo User experience designer leading the app and responsive website design from conception to delivery.
Problem & Solution 🤝
In 2019, immigrants comprised 13.7 percent of the total U.S. population*. Many people immigrate to a different country and needs to learn to communicate in a completely different language right away.
Alia lingua focuses on reading skills to help those people understand their new culture.
The goal was to design a platform that will help people learn to read in a new language at their own pace, with short lessons that include reading and listening exercises.
Process 🛣
I conducted user interviews, which then turned into empathy maps to better understand the target user and their needs.
Results from my research show that a fraction of users have learned a new language by themselves using some sort of technology.
Some people is frustrated because most apps look like video games instead of a reading book.
The feedback received through research showed that users want a simple solution that helps them understand their new language and culture.
Results 🎁
Our targeted users shared that it was easy to sign up and start a lesson, however, they had issues understanding the second language.
A comment from our users:
I think the layout is good. Just make sure you are being consistent with the language and not using words that the user hasn't learned yet. "🗣
Takeaways 📣
I learned that users need to have a dual language app, specially if they are not familiar with subtitles.
The most important takeaway for me is that there is a need for learning to communicate in different languages and technology can provide endless resources to help people do just that.
