An Analysis of a trend that goes beyond simple catwalk references that also reflect societal, economic or technological changes.

There is something special about the glamorous world of fashion where anybody and everybody seems to fit in. The fashion industry is crammed with variety of trends which keep toggling every season. Every single trend right now, whether on the runway or on the streets is blogger certified. If the fashionistas are wearing it, so is everyone else. It is safe to say that the whole world lusts over the latest trends and to have the outfit of the day tag. And thanks to Instagram which is filled with style inspiration by various fashion influencers, spreading the latest fashion word in not such a big deal. From decades, there has always been such a thing as too many choices whether it’s about takeaway food, Netflix shows and of course, clothes. In addition to designers coming with a new piece of trend every year, it’s much more of a struggle on what to buy and what not.
But let’s be analytical for a while, Shall we? Is each and every trend worth the penny spent because let’s face the not-so-ugly truth, each trend changes dramatically almost every month. So why splurge our hard-earned cash on unsettled things rather than saving some bills on those magical credit cards. The pace at which the people have started consuming fashion may as well cause a futuristic meltdown of fabrics or rather resources at hand.
Let the truth be told, fashion is about integrating things into the wardrobe which are timeless and yet classic and aren’t disposable the way a lot of fashion trends are these days. A fashion trend becomes the definition of one’s own psyche. It defines an individual’s persona and the lasting effect which an outfit can have. Fashion evolves every year, every season and there is no certainty for a long-lasting style. So why not dig in those old clothes from inside of the closet instead of buying a new one.
One can gladly put their minds on a subtler trend which has been spotted on the fashion runway over the last few years. Having suffered a turbulent few decades behind the racks, Vintage fashion is up and about stealing every individual’s eye whether it’s on the runway or on the streets.
Vintage style came to the rescue when low-waisted skinny jeans and loose tops with deep necks became an outdated match and the world needed a fresher but more familiar trend to walk the streets. A trend fabricated from the historic events that still defines the world’s most enthralling past.
Vintage is an absolute treat for those who cherish the aesthetic of the long-gone eras. Flared Bell- bottoms from the 70’s, luxurious bishop sleeves from the 80’s, slouchy mom jeans from the 90’s and what not. After the World War II, the ladies were found wearing comfortable pants, shift dresses and of course power suits which gave them immense power and confidence to step outside their home life and move towards an upward trajectory in their work life. Boned corsets which are making their way back to the industry were then used to achieve ‘thin waist’ to fit into those slim pencil skirts. Ultimately, this trend dismissed the notion that power is a masculine trait and lead to a major advancement in women empowerment. Vintage clothing has been associated with societal standards for decades now. The women of last century wore evening gowns made of velvet, tulle or silk and seamlessly blended in the crowd with chastity and aura. Vintage fashion has caused a shift from masculinism to feminism. It has a become a movement for strong curvy women to become a part of the fashion community and to beautifully showcase their curves in the pencil fit dresses and high waist pants.
Does Haute Couture have anything to do with economic couture? The designers might be showcasing the trend of the season but is it economically available to all fashion forward people out there? Vintage is mostly inspired by old thrifted clothes. Apart from the fact that anything from the golden era wardrobe is a vintage piece, it’s even sustainable and can be recycled for less than a hefty cost. Most of the contemporary fashion can be juxtaposed with vintage clothing to see how fashion has evolved. According to the Technical industry, people need not buy new clothes. Fashion recycles and so do clothes. Retailers often refer to vintage as “More value for money”. There are several second- hand stores which create a new outfit out of an old one at a minimal cost and voila! Get a retro touch to anything old. The technological world has evolved in a way that fashion applications selling thrifted clothes are the one-step destination for those who love the artistic appeal of the bygone eras.
Be it Racheal in Friends giving that simple, non-fussy retro look to an everyday outfit to Cher in Clueless for being the unforgettable 90’s fiesta who made vintage style the signature glam look for every girl. Vintage fashion has made a comeback in the 2000’s with a BANG.
There is something unique about the vintage styles. It’s not the everyday silhouette but it can always be a crowd distinguisher. The 90’s style can discern the wearer from the rest of the clan and when combined with the recent trends, it can definitely change the fashion game. If the aim is to build a wardrobe which may last more than a season then focussing on durability rather than the new trends can result in the wardrobe of dreams.
Anyone can work a pretty dress and heels but to really nail the vintage glam and edgy couture needs a pro. Vintage is a treat for those who are on a run for a more sartorial adventure- like digging through the discarded treasures or buying thrifted clothing with a slight touch of a nostalgic feel to every piece of dress.
