Sub AI Ingredient Substitution Web App Design

Sub AI is a lightweight web app that helps users find quick ingredient substitutes while cooking. I designed the interface to be as minimal and distraction-free as the idea itself — just type what’s missing, and get smart, usable suggestions instantly. Built for everyday cooks, foodies, and anyone who's run out of eggs (again).

The goal was to design a lightweight tool that feels instant, helpful, and dead simple, something users could turn to mid-recipe without friction. The product needed to:

Suggest almost accurate, usable ingredient substitutes

Be intuitive enough to require no onboarding

Support repeat usage with smart features like history and favorites

I designed a clean, mobile-first interface in Figma and worked out UX flows that emphasized speed and clarity. The following features were included in the final design:

Star an ingredient to save preferred substitutes

Give quick feedback on a suggestion using thumbs up/down

View history of past searches for quick re-use

Instant sign-up/sign-in flow to get users in quickly

History page to keep track of ingredient lookups over time

All features were optimized for mobile-first use, with thoughtful transitions and feedback loops to keep the experience smooth.
