Candleness: Building a Scent-Led Store That Sells in Under 60 Seconds Client: Candleness hand-poured soy candles and home fragrance (candles, car fresheners, spa-day gift sets) Role: Website Design & Build, UX Strategy, CRO Result: Newly built and launched client has not shared performance data
The Challenge
Candles are a hard product to sell online because the thing that actually sells them — scent — can't be experienced through a screen. Candleness needed a site that could substitute for that missing sense: using visual warmth, specific product detail, and social proof to make a shopper feel confident buying a scent sight (and smell) unseen. On top of that, the brand wanted a way to help undecided shoppers — the ones who love candles but freeze up faced with dozens of scent options — get to a purchase decision fast, without abandoning the site to "think about it."
Research & Discovery
Fragrance shopping online has one unique failure point: choice paralysis. A shopper who can't smell the product before buying often deals with the uncertainty by leaving to "think it over" — and most never come back. The build needed to solve for two different shopper types at once: people who already know what they want (fast checkout, clear product info) and people who don't (a way to get guided toward the right scent, quickly).
The Design & Build Process
Hero Selling the Feeling, Not Just the Candle The homepage opens with "Create a Home That Feels Calm, Cozy and Beautiful," paired with warm, editorial-style product photography of a lit candle in natural light. Rather than opening with a product grid, the hero sells the outcome of owning the product an atmosphere, not just an object which matters more for a sensory product like candles than a spec-first approach would. "Non-toxic ingredients" and "Hand-poured in small batches" sit right above the headline as quiet credibility markers, establishing quality before the pitch even starts.
Trust Signals at the Point of Decision Directly beneath the "Shop Product" CTA sits a tight row of trust signals: a 4.9-star rating from 200+ reviews, 1-2 day shipping, and a 30-day promise. Placing these immediately next to the primary CTA rather than lower on the page means a shopper never has to scroll or dig to find the reassurance they need at the exact moment they're deciding whether to click "buy."
Product Detail as a Confidence Substitute: The featured product card (Peony & Magnolia Petals) is deliberately detailed: scent notes ("Floral | Fresh | Soft"), burn time (approx. 40 hours), and net weight are all visible without clicking further. Since a shopper can't smell the product, this level of written specificity is doing the job scent normally would helping them imagine the experience concretely enough to feel confident buying.
The 60-Second Scent Quiz: Solving Choice Paralysis Directly This is the standout piece of the build: a short, guided quiz designed to take a shopper from "I don't know which scent to pick" to a confident purchase in under 60 seconds. Rather than making undecided shoppers browse an entire catalog and guess, the quiz asks a handful of quick questions and recommends a specific product turning the site's biggest natural drop-off point (decision fatigue) into an active conversion tool. This directly targets the exact hesitation unique to fragrance e-commerce, rather than relying on a generic product filter.
Best Sellers Section: Leaning on Social Proof for the Undecided "Loved by 1,000+ candle people" sits above a best-sellers row (candles, car fresheners, spa-day sets), giving shoppers who skip the quiz a fast, low-effort path to a popular, already-vetted choice. Including variant selectors (scent, size) directly on this section, rather than requiring a click into a separate product page, keeps the path to "Buy Now" as short as possible for shoppers who already know what they want.
Brand Personality: A Real Face Behind the Products A section featuring the founder alongside her own artwork/workspace adds a personal, human layer to the brand important for a small-batch, hand-poured product where authenticity and craft are part of the value proposition, not just the fragrance itself.
Visual & Brand Direction: The soft pink-and-white palette, script logo treatment, and warm lifestyle photography give Candleness a cozy, feminine-leaning aesthetic that matches the emotional promise in the hero copy — the whole visual language reinforces "calm, cozy, and beautiful" before a single word of product copy is read.
Checkout Friction Removal: A top announcement bar promoting "Fast checkout no account needed" plus a live discount code removes two common points of cart abandonment forced account creation and last-minute discount hunting right from the first screen a visitor sees.
The Outcome
The site has launched, but the client hasn't shared performance data yet, so results aren't available to report. Structurally, the build was designed to solve fragrance e-commerce's core problem the inability to let a shopper smell before they buy through detailed product information, fast social proof, and a first-of-its-kind (for this brand) 60-second scent-matching quiz built specifically to move undecided browsers to a confident purchase.
What the Client Said
"Samson was responsive, patient, and easy to communicate with to my feedback, made adjustments where needed, and helped improve the overall look and feel of my website. I appreciated his willingness to keep working through the details until the design felt more aligned with my brand. Thank you, Samson." — Candleness
