The Unlok app for investing in US stocks and ETFs, on iOS and Android. I built it from an empty repo as the only mobile engineer, and automated its releases to both stores. Built at Kupa, 2024–26.
The problem
Unlok lets people invest in US stocks and ETFs from their phone. When I joined, there was a web platform and a plan, but no app.
A trading app has to be fast, correct and calm under pressure. Prices move, orders fill, and a confusing screen costs real money.
What I did
I built the React Native app for iOS and Android from scratch: home, portfolio, markets, quotes with live charts, the order ticket, price alerts and notifications. I designed the screens straight from product discussions, with no designer in between.
The order ticket on the paper account: $500 of NVIDIA, about 2.3 shares, $500.50 with fees
I automated the releases. Every merge to main that touches the app builds both platforms in GitHub Actions with fastlane, sends the iOS build to TestFlight and the Android build to Google Play, and testers can pull a Firebase build whenever they need one.
I took the app through App Store and Google Play review, and it's live on both stores today.
Highlights
Zero to both stores. One codebase for iOS and Android, built by one engineer and approved by Apple and Google.
Releases without ceremony. A merge to main ships to TestFlight and Google Play. Nobody builds a release on a laptop.
A ticket you can type into. Buy opens a keypad: type an amount and the ticket shows the shares and the total, fees included.
Alerts from any quote. The bell on a quote sets a price alert with one or more conditions.
Where it stands now
Unlok is live on the App Store and Google Play, with customers trading US markets on the app I built. New versions reach testers and both stores from a merge to main.
