Caprice, a daily creative-practice app I designed and built

Tagline: A daily practice app for creative people. One constraint a day across eleven disciplines, reflection instead of scoring, and no points, badges, or streaks anywhere in it.
Walkthrough

Overview

Caprice is a daily practice app for creative people, and it is one of my own products, built end to end under my studio, Ackrite. Open it and the day's work is already there: one creative constraint to make something with whatever tools you have, then come back and reflect. There is no feed, no sign-up wall, and nothing to scroll. The whole thing is a deliberate argument against the streaks-and-badges model of habit apps, where the point becomes the score. Here the constraint is the product and the reflection is the reward.

Role and approach

I own the product, the design system, and the build. I designed every screen first, in light and dark, before writing a line of code, then built it on React Native so it feels native on both platforms. The central design rule was anti-gamification: keep the app quiet, keep it honest, and never turn a creative practice into a game of points.

Key contributions

The daily constraint. One creative constraint a day, sitting front and center, big and quiet and hard to ignore, with a shuffle if the prompt is not landing. It works for any kind of maker across eleven disciplines, from music to writing to cooking, each tuned to how that practice actually works.
Reflection over scoring. Reflection is the heart of it and it never keeps score. You log the time and the effort, leave a note, and think against a rotating line, with no points, badges, or streaks. Anti-gamification is a design rule here, not an oversight.
A private log and a mirror. Everything you make lands in a private log across disciplines and dates, and Patterns turns months of practice into a mirror rather than a scoreboard, showing how often you show up instead of how you rank.
Make it yours, in any language. Dark or light, haptics, reading comfort, and a colorway pulled from the Ackrite palette, so one tap recolors the whole app and it stays on brand. It ships in fifteen languages with full right-to-left support.
One design system, drawn first. Every screen exists in light and dark in a single design system I drew before any code, so the app is consistent from the first frame.

Stack and outcome

React Native and Expo with TypeScript and Zustand, Supabase for auth and sync, and RevenueCat for subscriptions. The outcome is a considered, opinionated product that treats creative practice as something to protect rather than gamify, designed and built entirely by me.
