Somna, a sleep and wellness app and the platform behind it

A sleep and wellness app people reach for at night, with an ambient player and a curated library on mobile, and a web analytics dashboard the team runs it from.
Walkthrough

Overview

Somna is a sleep and wellness app people open at night, and the platform the team runs it from during the day. I led the full-stack engineering across both surfaces. On the app side I took on a legacy Flutter codebase, brought it back to health, and shipped a calm listening experience for iOS and Android. On the platform side I built the analytics dashboard that shows the team what people actually listen to and how the library gets used. It is one product working end to end, from the thing you touch at night to the numbers the team reviews.

Role and approach

I was the lead full-stack engineer, working mobile and web. The starting point was a Flutter codebase that needed care, so a lot of the early work was stabilizing and modernizing before adding to it. From there the job spanned two very different surfaces, a consumer app that has to feel calm and effortless, and an internal dashboard that has to make usage legible, held together as a single product.

Key contributions

The ambient player. A calm player at the center of the app: play and pause, skip, favorite, a sleep timer, AirPlay, and offline download so a track keeps playing without a connection.
The full app experience. Onboarding, sign-in, a home feed, browsable categories of sleep and focus content, and favorites, account, and settings, all on Flutter for iOS and Android over Firebase for auth, data, and storage.
Bringing the codebase back to health. Taking on a legacy Flutter app and getting it to a state where it could be shipped and built on, rather than worked around.
The analytics platform. A Next.js web dashboard with charts and data tables, so the team can see what people listen to and how the library is used, turning raw usage into something they can steer the product with.

Outcome

One product across two surfaces, working end to end: the app people reach for at night, and the dashboard the team runs it from. Shipped on iOS and Android, on Flutter and Firebase, with the analytics platform behind it.
