Findmytherapist, a therapist directory built to be searched and found

A therapist directory with instant search and real filtering, and a page for every location and specialty so it can rank and be found in the first place.
Walkthrough

Overview

A directory only earns its keep if two things are true: people can find it, and once they are on it they can narrow to the right person fast. Most directories do one and skip the other. Findmytherapist is built for both. Every city and every specialty has its own real page that can rank in search, and once someone arrives they can filter to a therapist in a few taps. The findability is part of the architecture, not a marketing task bolted on at the end.

Role and approach

I built it end to end as the sole developer: the data model, the search, the SEO page system, and the integrations. The core decision was to treat search visibility as a first-class feature, generating a page for every meaningful location and specialty combination so that long-tail queries land on something real, then making the on-site experience fast enough that a visitor never has to think about how to narrow down.

Key contributions

Search that feels instant. Live search with autocomplete and a command palette, so a visitor gets to the right result in a few keystrokes rather than scrolling a list.
Filtering that narrows as you type. Filters across specialty, location, and availability, so the directory collapses to the handful of people who actually fit.
Programmatic SEO. Dynamic pages generated for location and specialty combinations, so a search for a therapist in a specific town and niche lands on a page built for exactly that, instead of a generic list.
The rest of the product. Full therapist profiles, a Markdown blog, and a therapist sign-up flow, wired to payments, transactional email, SMS reminders, and webhook routing.

Stack and outcome

Built on Next.js 16 and React 19 with Neon Postgres and Drizzle, better-auth for email and Google sign-in, and Stripe, Resend, Twilio, and Svix for the money, mail, messaging, and webhooks. The result is a directory that is usable and findable at once, with the search surface designed in from the first commit rather than retrofitted.
