Most design systems feel like they were built for robots.
Edbot.ai wasn’t supposed to be one of
them.Edbot.ai is a free educational platform by Solve Education! that helps people learn English and essential life skills. When I joined as Principal Designer, I found we were running on an off-the-shelf design system. Technically fine. Emotionally flat. It didn’t speak to our users, and in education, that’s a big miss. So I tore it down and rebuilt it. Fonts, icons, cards, buttons, you name it, I reimagined it. The highlight for me was giving our mascot a full range of expressions, so it actually felt alive and could cheer learners on instead of just existing as a static logo.I went deep into user research to understand who we were really designing for. That shaped everything from the colors we chose to the tone of the interface. The goal was simple: make the app engaging enough that people want to come back and learn, not feel like they’re doing homework. The result? A design system that isn’t just cohesive, but actually enjoyable to use. It’s flexible enough for the team to ship new features without design chaos, and polished enough to feel like it truly belongs to Solve Education!. In short, we went from “generic template” to “custom-built system that users connect with.” And the best part is, it no longer feels like design for the sake of design. It feels like a design for the learners.
