More than a design system, the White Card project is a complete mobile app ecosystem, built for scalability. The White card project has a vast library of customizable components according to each partner's identity and tone of voice, it also has a robust plug-and-play ready system that allows merchants to launch their credit card management applications, using the services and processing structure of Itaú, the largest financial company in Latin America.

Challenge

Reduce the cost of developing, maintaining, and time to market credit card management applications for merchants who lack development expertise. Change the Taylor-made model of app development to a more agile and scalable model.

Results

The White card project enabled Itaú to launch 7 partner merchant apps in 3 months, the previous time was one year to launch.
The headcount per project was reduced from 120 people to 40 since only two development teams were needed to plug and customize each partner app in the itaú structure.
With the increases in launch speed, reduction in headcount, and increase in development capacity, the cost per project has drastically reduced, around 75%.

Process

Research & Analysis: We conducted user interviews, and surveys to understand the pain points and merchant needs. We also analyzed the partner's legacy apps to frame how to improve the experience.
Information Architecture: Based on the research findings, we structured the app's navigation and content, prioritizing scalability and simplicity.
Wireframing & Prototyping: We designed low-fidelity wireframes to visualize the new layout and navigation, iteratively refining them based on user feedback. Afterward, we built a high-fidelity, interactive prototype to test the design.
Usability Testing: We conducted usability tests with a diverse group of users to validate the design and identify areas for improvement. Based on the feedback, we made the necessary adjustments to the design.
Visual Design & Style Guide: We developed a solid design language and ecosystem prioritizing the personalization and scalability, we also designed a design system guide to ensure that the partners will understand all the power regarding the White card project.

The white card project was a hard project to deliver, dealing with legacy apps and migrating our structure to make it work with Itaú was undoubtedly the most complex part, but the design team managed to make tangible and masterfully prioritize our needs and pains, I feel proud of this delivery after these almost six months of the project.

Conclusion

Acting on such a large project within a company with thousands of employees like Itaú was extremely challenging. Every detail was discussed in exhausting with the security, and legal team, and also needed approval from a committee that analyzed if what we proposed was aligned with the Brazilian central bank institution laws.
