5 Simple Steps Your Dry Skin Care Routine Needs
All skin is NOT created equally. Even though your bestie may have that glowing and hydrated-looking skin because she’s got her skincare routine down pat, doesn’t mean the same products or steps will work for your own skin. That routine may end up making your dry skin even worse, resulting in more flakey, rough patches and even discomfort. If you’re like me, you’ve tried what feels like hundreds of different products and spent more money than you care to count on some fancy, top-shelf products only to be left disappointed because they didn’t work, or in some cases made your skin even worse. So what can you do for your dry skin? Let’s dive into the dos and don’ts of dry skin care and find out if you’ve got something in your routine that’s working against you.

Speedy Snippets:

What causes dry skin? Dry skin can be caused by a variety of factors including weather, age, underlying medical conditions, bathing habits, and YES, your dry skin care routine.
Is dry skin preventable? In most instances the proper skin care routine for your specific skin type can help prevent and reduce your issues with dry skin.
Can my dry skin lead to other skin issues? In short, yes, it can. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not just oily skin that results in acne- dry skin can too. Depending on the severity of the dry skin, you could also see long-term damage or blemishes and can be opening yourself up for infection if it gets to the point where your skin is cracking.
Are the products I’m using causing my dry skin? It’s definitely possible. Just because you’re seeing it all over your Tiktok FYP, doesn’t mean that it’s actually the right product for you. I know the algorithm is good… but it’s not always that good.

3 Dry Skin Myths Debunked

You Need to Drink More Water!
Are we saying that you shouldn’t drink more water? Of course not! While drinking enough water is definitely a good choice, the amount of water you drink has relatively little to do with how dry your skin is. You’re not going to see your skin miraculously plump up or become hydrated just by drinking a gallon of water every day. If it were that easy, the skin care industry would likely not be around.
You Need a More Complex Skin Care Routine!
Nope! It’s all about making your skincare routine work for you and not against you. You don’t need to have a 27-step process, all with the most expensive products to banish your dry skin for good. It’s important to know first off, whether or not there are any underlying causes to your dry skin and find the root cause. That’s where you start. Then, when it comes to your actual dry skin care routine, you have to know what each one does and how it interacts with your specific skin type. For example, a product that is heavily scented, might not be the best option to combat your dry and sensitive skin and may result in even more dry skin issues. At the end of the day, your dry skin care routine does not have to be fancy or overly complex (we’ll share our basic process later on), it just needs to be right for your skin.
Exfoliation Is The Enemy!
Actually, when it comes to us dry skin girlies, over-exfoliation is the enemy. If you’ve got a lot of build up and dry skin, it may actually be harder for your products (like your moisturizer) to penetrate your skin barrier. Exfoliating every so often is healthy and can often help your products work better to combat your dry skin. But again, just make sure you’re using something that is best for your skin and that you’re not overdoing it.

The Dos of Dry Skin Care

Do Build a Routine and Stick To It!
Building a dry skin care routine that works for you TAKES TIME! Let me say that again… it is going to take time for you to see results. As much as I would love to say that your new moisturizer is going to drastically change your skin in a week, it just won’t. With any new product or step you implement into your dry skin care routine, you likely won’t see results for one to three months. So, stick with it for a little while and see what the longer term results actually are unless you are having an adverse reaction to it in which case you should stop immediately and see a doctor.
Do Moisturize!
Okay, this one is probably a no-brainer. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! But, just like skin, not all moisturizers are created equally. For dry skin girlies like us, find moisturizers that are fragrance free and have less unnatural ingredients. One of my absolute favorite options for moisturizing is shea butter. You can read up on all of the benefits of shea butter when it comes to moisturizing your dry skin here. **Link to shea butter post**
Do Protect Your Skin with a Good Sunscreen!
It goes without saying that you have to protect your skin which applies to all skin types, but most importantly for those of us with dry skin. Not only does SPF protect from cancer, but it also protects your skin barrier which can help reduce your dry skin and prevent blemishes from sun damage. Many moisturizers do have SPF built in, so when thinking about your next moisturizer, do take that into consideration. And one final tip when it comes to sun protection… even if it’s cloudy and gloomy out, you still absolutely need it. If you plan on going outside today, regardless of the weather, protect your skin!
Do Wash Your Face!
Keeping your face clean is so important when it comes to caring for your dry skin. You may have heard that washing too frequently can cause your skin to dry out more, which isn’t entirely wrong. But similar to the other products in your dry skin care arsenal, using a cleanser specifically designed for your skin and one that includes hydrating ingredients like cocoa butter, glycerin, and hyaluronic acid.

The Don’ts of Dry Skin Care

Don’t Take Hot Showers!
I know, I know… we love a good scalding hot shower. But the problem is that it is absolutely drying your skin out. Try reducing the temperature to warm or room temp (if you can tolerate that) if you’re noticing more dry skin. A warm shower can be just as relaxing and cause less stress on your skin. And one pro tip- don’t wash your face while you’re showering. You’re more likely to use hotter water when you’re in the shower versus doing it separately which can help prevent dry skin.
Don’t Use Products with Strong Fragrances!
Strong and harsh chemicals can often irritate dry, rough skin even more and lead to dryer skin. Make sure you’re finding products that have limited fragrances to reduce irritation. Keep an eye out for unscented products or products with more natural ingredients.
Don’t Pick At Your Dry, Flakey Skin!
Just like with acne, picking at your skin can often make the problems you’re experiencing even worse. You’ll wind up with more irritated skin and can potentially permanently damage it as well. Your skin, especially on your face, is sensitive and can be easily damaged. If you’re noticing your dry skin care routine isn’t working, it might be time to change it up a little bit.
Don’t Skip the SPF!
I know we just talked about this, but it’s important enough that I needed to mention it twice. Protect your skin! Help stop your dry skin troubles before they start and prevent them from getting worse by using a good SPF every single day. Also, remember if you’re out in the sun for longer than usual or are sweating, you may need to apply it more than once throughout the day.
Now that we’ve got the dos and don’ts covered, you may be feeling a little lost as to what your dry skin care routine should actually look like. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with 5 steps that your routine should include!

5 Steps That Are Crucial to Your Dry Skin Care Routine

Step 1. Cleanse
Over-washing your face can cause additional dryness and irritation BUT that doesn’t mean you should skip it altogether, especially if you wear makeup. You should be cleansing your face daily to remove makeup, dirt, pollutants, etc. Make sure you find a hydrating cleanser that includes ingredients like hyaluronic acid.
Step 2. Tone
Toner is important for removing any last traces of the dirt and makeup buildup that your cleanser didn’t catch. The problem is that many toners include alcohol which can dry out your skin. So, when picking a toner, be sure to find one that is alcohol-free.
Step 3. Target
Once your face is clean, it’s time to target your specific problem areas. Again, choose serums and creams that include hydrating ingredients so that you’re not inadvertently drying out your skin more while taking care of blemishes, wrinkles, etc.
Step 4. Moisturize
What’s the second most important part of your dry skin care routine? You guessed it, moisturizing. Make sure you’re not under-moisturizing and that you’re using a moisturizer that is built for dry skin. Remember, not all moisturizers are created equally. Bonus points if you use a moisturizer with SPF.
Step 5. Protect
SPF! Protect your skin at all costs. Even if your moisturizer has SPF, make sure that it’s enough. Not only does sun damage enhance dry skin problems, but it also comes with so many other concerns. Make sure you use sunscreen every single day (even when it’s gloomy out).
Finding a dry skin care routine that actually works can be tough, especially when your favorite influencers are coming out with their own skin care lines that can cost a fortune and then end up not even working as promised. But don’t worry, you don’t need to spend a ton of money just to get your dry skin under control. Even if you’re a busy college student with barely 10 minutes to spare, you can still create a solid routine that relieves your dry skin. Check out our tips for how to implement a dry skin care routine when you’re a busy college student here. **link to second blog post**
Even if you’ve got the time, I know how overwhelming it can be to pick products when there are thousands of options out there. Hopefully all of these tips help you in picking out the best products for your routine, but just in case you need a starting point, I’ll leave you with one final recommendation: check out our Bae Butter, AKA “The Skin Softener,” specifically designed for us dry skin girlies that you can use on your face AND body to relieve your dry skin. **Link to product page**
