Fold: The Day I Designed a Product That Doesn’t Exist (Yet)
Last month I lost forty minutes looking for a contract I had saved in the right folder. It just wasn’t the right folder in the right month, under the right name.
That was the moment I thought: why am I the one doing the filing?
So, I did what designers do when something annoys them. I designed my way out of it. Fold is a concept for an AI file agent, a workspace where you describe the work and the software handles the rest. Type “file every invoice by vendor” or “onboard Kemi: folders, docs, access, welcome note,” and the folders fall into place.
The real challenge wasn’t the idea. It was making automation feel human. Most AI products look like cold command lines or generic chat boxes. I wanted Fold to feel like walking into an office where the work is already moving.

That shaped every decision:
A headline with a voice. I paired a sharp editorial serif with an italic gradient on one word, “files,” so the page sounds like a person, not a platform.
Folders as the hero. Instead of a stock illustration, I built a stack of color-coded, overlapping folder tabs showing live file counts and active flows. You see the product working before you read a single feature.
One input, zero friction. A single prompt box with suggested actions and category chips. No setup wizard, no sprawling menu. If you can say it, Fold can do it.
Presence. Teammate cursors (Ada, Kemi) drift across the screen, and a live status bar reports what the agent just did. It makes the product feel like a team, not a tool.
Two moods, one brand. A soft aqua daytime theme and a deep starlit dark mode, with the same layout and accents so the identity never breaks.
Fold is a self-initiated concept, not a real product. But designing it sharpened how I approach SaaS landing pages, AI product interfaces, and design systems built for clarity and trust.
If you’re building an AI tool, a productivity app, or any product that needs to explain something complex in five seconds, I’d love to talk.
