Civic Space GPS | Editorial

TETIIZ Stephanie Goncalves

In an open and healthy civic space, civil society groups and individuals are able to organize, participate, and communicate freely. At the same time, they can claim their rights and influence the political and social structures around them.

Civic Space GPS is a serialized digital publication, available in both Portuguese and English, produced by the Igarapé Institute — an independent think tank that proposes solutions to public, climate, and digital security challenges through research, new technologies, strategic communication, and policy influence.
Throughout 2021 and 2022, the Igarapé Institute mapped the main strategies used to shrink civic space, as well as the institutional responses and acts of resistance put forward by civil society groups to counter setbacks. This was done through daily monitoring of news outlets. Our findings were published in quarterly analyses, totaling 8 Civic Space GPS bulletins, available at: https://igarape.org.br/temas/espaco-civico/gps-do-espaco-civico/
