Willy the Parrot – Children's Book

Client: Coralia Quiroz School (El Salvador) Role: Illustrator & Layout Designer

Willy the Parrot was created as an educational tool to help children ages 5 to 7 practice their first phonemes in English. With short, accessible sentences and vibrant illustrations, the book guides young readers through an engaging reading journey, making learning both fun and effective.

The challenge was to design a book that not only aligned with early literacy principles but also captured children's attention through effective visual storytelling. The layout, font choices, and color contrast needed to be carefully considered to enhance readability and engagement.

To develop a strong visual identity for Willy the Parrot, I researched parrot species and habitats for reference. I also studied various children's books to understand effective text placement and layout strategies for young readers. After refining the concept, I illustrated the book and structured the pages to maintain an optimal balance between text and imagery.

The book was enthusiastically received by Coralia Quiroz School and became part of their student curriculum materials. Teachers appreciated its engaging approach, making it a valuable addition to their reading programs.

This project deepened my understanding of font sizing and contrast principles for young readers. Additionally, collaborating with educators provided insights into how children interact with learning materials, helping me refine my approach to educational design.
