Pouchers – Cross-Border Payments Platform

Overview

Pouchers is a cross-border payments and virtual card platform designed to simplify international transactions for individuals and businesses. The platform enables users to create USD virtual cards, send and receive global payments, manage multiple currencies, and pay utilities all from one secure, easy-to-use interface.
As the Lead and Senior Product Designer, I was responsible for driving the design strategy across mobile, web, and the internal admin dashboard. I oversaw the entire product lifecycle from user research and information architecture to high-fidelity UI design and design system creation.

The Challenge

In regions like Africa, freelancers and businesses face major friction when it comes to accessing international payment solutions. Local cards are often declined for global transactions, currency conversions are inconsistent, and existing cross-border apps lack clarity and transparency.
The challenge was to create a product experience that would empower users to:
Seamlessly create and manage virtual USD cards.
Send and receive international payments.
Store and manage funds across multiple currencies.
Handle bill payments and utilities directly within the app.
All while ensuring a secure, modern, and trustworthy experience consistent across mobile and web platforms.

The Approach

The design approach centered on simplicity, trust, and transparency. My process was grounded in understanding user behaviors, aligning with business goals, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver an intuitive and visually refined experience.
1. Research & Discovery
Conducted user interviews with freelancers and small business owners to uncover pain points in managing cross-border payments.
Studied competitors like Revolut, Payoneer, and Chipper Cash to identify gaps in onboarding, transaction clarity, and currency management.
Mapped key user journeys to identify friction points. especially in card creation, sending funds, and verifying identity.
2. UX & Information Architecture
Designed user flows that reduced complexity around card creation and transfers.
Defined a clear navigation structure across mobile and web for effortless movement between core sections.
For the admin dashboard, I developed a hierarchical layout that allows internal teams to monitor transactions, manage users, and resolve disputes efficiently.
3. UI Design & Visual Language
Crafted a modern, minimal interface with a focus on usability, clarity, and brand trust.
Ensured visual consistency across all touchpoints by building a scalable design system that covered color tokens, typography, spacing, and reusable components.
4. Prototyping & Testing
Built interactive prototypes in Figma to test flows.
Conducted usability testing to validate user comprehension and navigation ease.
Iterated based on feedback to improve micro-interactions and reduce cognitive load during payment actions.

The Solution

The final product delivers a seamless experience for both users and internal teams:
A mobile app that allows users to create and manage USD virtual cards, send payments, and track transactions with transparency.
A web platform that provides the same functionality with an optimized layout for larger screens and accessibility.
An admin dashboard that enables internal monitoring of user activities, analytics, and compliance workflows designed for efficiency and clarity.

Impact & Results

Simplified cross-border transaction flows, reducing user friction during onboarding and payments.
Increased user confidence with transparent feedback and improved visual hierarchy.
Enhanced internal efficiency through a well-organized admin dashboard, reducing time spent on manual user and transaction management.
Strengthened Pouchers’ brand perception as a modern, reliable, and user-first fintech platform.

Reflection

Designing for Pouchers was a deep dive into the complexities of fintech usability and trust design. The process reinforced my belief that great financial products balance clarity, empathy, and security. Through close collaboration and iterative testing, we built a product ecosystem that not only simplifies global payments but also empowers users to feel in control of their finances wherever they are.
