Simple, Elegant Mobile App Sharing TOTEM Tarot Deck
Rachel White of TOTEM Readings was the client for this project. She had recently published a beautiful and unique new tarot deck, which is for sale on Amazon. This project entailed building a proof of concept mobile app to provide Users with a limited, but on-brand digital experience of the tarot deck.
Project Goals:
Make every part of the experience match the TOTEM brand. This included the listings in the App Stores, the moment the app loads on the device, the user experience while using the app, and what happens when it closes.
The user experience should be simple and elegant. No extra bells and whistles to distract from the artwork of the deck and the meaning behind the images.
Tools & Skills:
FlutterFlow: this low code app was utilized for this project, which worked very well.
Flutter and Dart: direct coding was needed in a few spots.
GitHub: all revisions tracked.
Testing platforms: tested and utilized a few different platforms like LambdaTest to test the app on multiple iOS & Android devices "in the cloud".
App Features & Functionality
The functionality was modeled after an existing app that the client liked.
The "deck of cards" would load when the app started (cards are downloaded with the app, no internet connection or account required).
The user can swipe through the cards, and reshuffle anytime.
Tapping on a card triggered a smooth "card flipping" animation, revealing a brief write-up the client wrote for each card specifically for this app.
There was also an about page sharing more information about Rachel and the artist who created the images for the deck.
Project Process and Results:
I met with the client at the outset to understand goals, budget, and collaboration preferences
From there, all of the materials needed (images, text, etc...) were requested and gathered
With frequent iterations, I was able to show the client progress and get important feedback on the look and feel of the app.
We progressed the app to the point of having it available for her to see it and test on her devices using Apple's TestFlight. I was also able to test it on Android devices.
The project was put on hold after running into issues with Apple's app approval process. The feedback was that there were too many apps like this already in their app store and that it offered no new features for Apple Users, which totally misses the point of the app's design and project's user experience goals.
