OVERVIEW
Deliverables Brand identity, packaging, guidelines A specialty café brand has to speak to two people at once: the person on the street deciding where to stop, and the person who already knows what good coffee tastes like and is deciding whether you're worth their loyalty. Cafe Steepco was built to do both — warm enough to invite the first visit, considered enough to earn the return. THE BRIEF Build a brand identity for a specialty coffee and tea brand targeting the conscious café consumer. The brand needed to communicate quality and warmth simultaneously — approachable enough to feel welcoming, refined enough to signal genuine craft. No chalkboard aesthetics. No hand-drawn steamcups. No kraft paper.
THE CHALLENGE
The specialty coffee and tea space is split between two dominant aesthetics: stripped-back Scandinavian minimalism and warm nostalgic identity. Cafe Steepco needed a third position — warm without being nostalgic, minimal without being cold. That tension is much harder to resolve than either extreme
THE APPROACH
The identity was built around the tension between warmth and precision. The wordmark uses letterforms with human qualities — slight warmth in the curves — but resolved with typographic discipline so it never tips into casual. The palette drew from café materiality itself: warm neutrals grounded by a deep accent that carries the brand's energy without overwhelming it. Packaging was considered from the earliest stages — the takeaway cup, bag, retail label, and branded packaging were all part of the system architecture before a single element was finalized.
