For I Am Rooted by Amanda Friedel, the design concept was built around the idea of belonging, growth, identity, and the connection between children and the world around them.
We wanted the cover to feel warm, nurturing, and imaginative while visually communicating the meaning behind the title. The central concept uses nature and roots as a metaphor for personal growth and a strong sense of grounding, creating an image that feels both meaningful and approachable for a young audience.
The visual direction was developed with a soft, playful aesthetic, using organic shapes, inviting colors, and child-friendly imagery to create an emotional connection at first glance. The typography was carefully selected and positioned to complement the illustration without competing with it, allowing the title to remain the focal point.
The final cover was designed to balance whimsy and emotional depth, creating a visual identity that feels appropriate for a children’s book while reinforcing the deeper message of the story: that children can grow confidently when they understand where they come from and know that they are supported, connected, and rooted.
