A Handyman Marketplace Built in 56 Hours

The Handyman Marketplace is a web application that allows customers to browse, chat, and book trusted handymen for services like furniture assembly, plumbing, and painting.

The project was completed in a 56-hour sprint using Figma to design both desktop and mobile views, with a strong focus on trust, usability, and secure payments.

Design a platform where customers can easily discover & hire handymen.

Create a safe payment flow using escrow.

Design for two user types (customers & handymen) with tailored dashboards.

Balancing simplicity (for customers) with functionality (for handymen).

Making negotiations feel human without overcomplicating the UI.

I started by exploring existing service marketplaces like Thumbtack, TaskRabbit, and even Airbnb. The goal wasn’t to copy, but to understand:

How do they build trust between two strangers?

What does a seamless booking flow look like?

How do they balance simplicity with flexibility (especially when services vary in complexity)?

This gave me a strong baseline and a list of must-have features: reviews, availability, secure payments, and transparent profiles

With less than 56 hours on the clock, I jumped straight into low-fidelity wireframes.

Sketched out homepage flows for browsing services.

Drafted profile layouts with services, reviews, and calendars.

Built chat screens for negotiation and invoice generation.

Designed bookings dashboards for both customers and handymen.

The focus was on clarity of flow, not visual polish. I needed to validate that the navigation would feel natural.

Once the wireframes were solid, I moved into high-fidelity UI in Figma. This stage was about:

Crafting a clean, modern aesthetic that feels trustworthy.

Designing both mobile and desktop screens to ensure consistency.

Adding visual hierarchy (clear service categories, easy-to-read dashboards, human-friendly chat UI).

The guiding principle: “design for trust.” Every button, color, and spacing choice was about making the platform feel reliable and easy to use.

Bookings Page – Active & completed jobs tracked in one place.

Escrow Wallet – Customers pay into escrow, handymen withdraw after job completion.

Dashboards – Spending insights for customers, earnings insights for handymen
