Overview

To design a fitness app that offers customized workout plans, progress tracking, and motivational features, focusing on intuitive navigation and an engaging visual experience.

The Problem

Many fitness apps overwhelm users with generic workouts, inconsistent tracking, or overly complex navigation. The client wanted a clean, intuitive app that felt approachable for both beginners and advanced users, while still offering customized plans and visual progress tracking.

Secondary Research

To better understand the fitness landscape and user motivations, I conducted secondary research using industry reports, market data, and government health statistics. The findings highlighted the growing opportunity within the fitness sector, with global industry revenues continuing to rise and a steady increase in demand for digital fitness solutions.

$216B

Expected revenue in fitness industry for 2023

66%

Revenue increased in online fitness in 2021 compared to pre-pandemic

$59B

Projected revenue by 2027 for online fitness industry

Guidance

150 mins

moderate to vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity per week should be met as outlined by the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines

Format

73%

of Canadians said they prefer to exercise on their own rather than in a gym or group setting according to Made in Canada .

Experience

1 in 5

Canadians said their fitness has declined before the pandemic as reported by CTV News

Behaviors

1 in 4 (1.4B)

people do not meet the WHO recommendations of 150 mins physical activity/week as stated by PAHO .

Primary Research

To better understand the needs & pain points of my users...
I recruited participants that meet the following criteria:Millennials in their 20s-30s.Reside in Canada.Have exercised at home before at various levels.Comfortable with using technology.

Research Synthesis - Affinity Mapping

By grouping the insights from these interviews, I identified four key themes that set my design direction.
Content and Access: Easy access to tailored fitness content is crucial.
Motivations and Social Support: Social interactions boost motivation, but there are also distractions that can hinder consistency.
Time Management: Busy schedules are a significant barrier.
Personalized Routine and Progress: Finding and sticking to a tailored routine is challenging.

To solve this issue...

How might we encourage millennials to maintain regular physical activities, so that they can incorporate fitness into their lifestyles for their overall well-being?

User Stories

Ideate tangible features based on interview findings through user stories. By creating user stories, I was able to ensure that FitLife's design and features were deeply aligned with the real-world needs and behaviors of its target users.

How did Fitz come to life?

Initial Design — Start a Workout Task Flow

My design process began with the typical way users explore a range of workout options. They then select one to examine more closely and start their workout.

The Challenge

How can we encourage users to start their workout?

Looking back at my persona, she is a working professional that does not have enough time and knowledge to build effective and efficient workout routines for herself. Therefore, I decided to add the feature of letting the user quickly create a training plan with the help of AI. The most engaging way to get started is by having an intuitive and casual conversation with Lilia, our AI bot agent!🤖

And how can we facilitate action?

Now that the training plan has been created with our power AI bot, Lilia 🤖, the current challenge is: how can we encourage users to ACT NOW? and integrate this into their daily lives which will eventually turn into their habits?

Project Evaluation

• Comprehensive research to inform design decisions
Conducting secondary research and synthesizing insights through affinity mapping, personas, and user stories helped ensure every design decision addressed real user motivations and pain points, rather than assumptions. This process created a stronger foundation for a personalized fitness experience.
• Designing for Long-Term Engagement
Fitness apps succeed by encouraging consistency, not just completing workouts. Throughout the design process, I focused on creating intuitive navigation, clear progress tracking, and motivating interactions that support users in building sustainable fitness habits.
• Iterative Problem Solving
From low-fidelity wireframes to interactive prototypes, each iteration refined the user experience by simplifying flows, improving usability, and validating design decisions. This project reinforced the value of exploring multiple solutions before converging on a cohesive and user-centered experience.
