Overview
I was tasked to design Uni-Train, a mobile app concept created to support college and university students in achieving their academic goals. The purpose of the app is to connect students with the right tutors and provide personalized learning plans that adapt to their individual needs. By offering tailored guidance and progress tracking, Uni-Train aims to help students improve their grades and strengthen their chances of successfully transferring from college to university.
Project Goals
To design a iOS mobile app that contains the following features:
Personalized learning plans tailored to individual needs.
Visual progress tracking to keep users motivated.
Peer collaboration tools to foster a sense of community.
The Problem
The untransparency of university transfer information and the complex preparation process
More and more international students are looking to apply for university transfer from a college. However, being an international students may be challenging to adapt to the local culture and study style of a new environment. And on top of that, finding all the relevant information about the school they would like to transfer to can be tough.
University admission pages typically only list the required courses and minimum attained GPA to apply for university transfer. There can still be non-transparency in the required admission information, which can lead to numerous phone calls to the admission team for clarification.
With Uni-Train, we connect like-minded students with the goal of applying for university transfer. They can communicate with each other to share their experience and advice with students who have successfully transferred.

User Flow
After talking to the course planners from Uni Zone and conducting interviews with students, I drafted out the journey of a college student looking to transfer to a university.
"I just came to Canada for a year, I don't have that many friends, it is so hard to find someone who also wants to transfer to the same university and even same program."
"Whenever I have questions and call the admission team, they just keep asking me to check the university website, which actually does not provide much information."
"I don't know where to find the information."
"I always have to open lots of different website to understand this university transfer information."
"It's always very time-consuming and I'm still confused."
"So complicated."
User Research
Although Uni-train could be used for any students that are interested in university transfer, I have created a persona to focus on international students that are currently attending college and are looking to transfer to a university in BC.
The Solution
Provide information on the university and courses
Provide the necessary information to students when they apply for university transfer. Uni-Train includes information about different universities in BC, including ratings of courses.
Build a friendly online community to facilitate engagement
By posting and answering questions on the discussion board, it encourages students to communicate with others and share their experience. By building this friendly community, it helps students feel engaged and solve their questions.
Provide guidance in university transfer
Uni-Train allows students to keep track of their academic progress and understand their current stage in university transfer.
Final Prototype
Check university information
Users can learn about the university's world ranking, news and read the university-related discussions.
Find answers in Discussion Board
Users can post and answer questions from the discussion board. They can also like the post so that they can get notifications when there is new comments in the post.
Learn about transferable courses
Users can read the course outlines and check if the course is transferable to the university credits. Users can also read the comments under that courses for the course reviews.
Project Evaluation
• Develop empathy for users, and keep users in mind all the time.
When designing a product, it is important to keep our users in mind and to focus on the user's pain points. Think, "What can I do to make their life easier?" Thinking about their needs, goals and challenges, helps me optimize the user experience in the design.
• Encourage engagement.
While designing an app, user adoption is key. Low engagement can occur and lead to obsolete adoption if there is no user engagement, regardless of how appealing a design is. To encourage interactions between users, this project creates a friendly community via the discussion board. I prompted users to either answer questions from others or post questions to drive user adoption.
