VMware Horizon & Windows Environment Modernization
Project Overview
I served as the implementation engineer for an extensive VMware Horizon environment upgrade, modernizing both hardware and virtual systems for a company’s on-premises infrastructure. This project involved replacing outdated VMware host hardware, upgrading virtual desktops (VDI) infrastructure and servers, and unifying management under a single vCenter appliance for streamlined operations and enhanced compatibility.
Key Deliverables
1. New VMware Host Setup & Integration
- Deployed a new VMware host with updated hardware and video card support, aligning it with the existing vCenter appliance for unified management across old and new hosts.
2. Virtual Server Upgrades
- Migrated virtual servers to the latest Windows Server 2022 environment, ensuring continued support and improved performance for the company’s essential applications.
3. Virtual Desktop Migration
- Transitioned Windows 7 virtual desktops to Windows 10, offering users a more secure and efficient desktop experience.
4. Decommissioning & Documentation
- Completed the decommissioning of outdated servers, providing detailed documentation of configurations and setup choices for the internal IT team.
Results
The project concluded with a fully modernized VMware Horizon environment, significantly enhancing performance, compatibility, and management efficiency while future-proofing the company’s infrastructure.
