Live Server Troubleshooting for Domain Server & Email Functionality
Project Overview
I collaborated with a client in CET to troubleshoot critical server configurations affecting email functionality and API access within their multi-domain Windows Server environment. The engagement focused on ensuring email continuity when transitioning from an older domain server (Domain1) to a replacement server (Domain4).
Key Deliverables
1. DNS & AD Configuration Review
- Conducted a live review of DNS settings, replication, and forwarding rules between Domain1 and Domain4 to assess any dependencies.
- Verified Active Directory dependencies to ensure seamless authentication across servers.
2. SMTP & Email Functionality
- Examined SMTP configurations to ensure email traffic could route correctly when Domain1 was turned off.
- Troubleshot email-related issues linked to the transition to Domain4, focusing on maintaining email functionality for client applications.
3. Network & Firewall Verification
- Performed a top-level check on network and firewall settings to rule out barriers affecting API access and email delivery when Domain1 was offline.
Results
Through a high-level troubleshooting session over Zoom, we pinpointed key areas in DNS and SMTP settings that required adjustments to support a seamless transition. Documentation provided to the client outlined suggested configuration tweaks for resolving continuity issues between Domain servers.
Technical Skills Utilized
- Server Administration: Windows Server, Active Directory
- Networking: DNS, SMTP configurations
- Live Troubleshooting: Zoom, Remote Desktop
