TELUS Health acquired its Home Health Monitoring (THHM) platform to provide remote patient monitoring capabilities for health authorities and hospitals across Canada.
Following the acquisition, the platform required significant architectural modernization to improve maintainability, scalability, developer productivity, and long-term product evolution.
As a Senior Software Engineer, I led the engineering effort to re-architect and modernize the platform while ensuring uninterrupted service for healthcare providers and thousands of patients relying on the system.
Objective
The platform had been originally developed by an external agency and had reached a point where new feature development, maintenance, and scalability were becoming increasingly difficult.
Our objective was to modernize the engineering foundation without disrupting day-to-day clinical operations.
The modernization focused on:
Improving overall system architecture
Reducing technical debt
Increasing deployment velocity
Modernizing backend services
Simplifying developer workflows
Creating a foundation for future healthcare products
Scope of Work
Platform Modernization
Led the technical redesign of core platform components, introducing cleaner architectural boundaries, modern development practices, and a more maintainable codebase.
Backend Architecture
Designed and implemented modern backend services that improved scalability, API consistency, and long-term maintainability while supporting existing clinical workflows.
Cloud & Infrastructure
Worked on modernizing deployment pipelines, cloud infrastructure, and operational tooling to improve reliability, observability, and deployment confidence.
Healthcare Workflows
Collaborated with product managers, clinicians, and engineers to ensure modernization efforts preserved critical workflows for remote patient monitoring, patient engagement, and care management.
Engineering Leadership
Provided technical direction for modernization initiatives, participated in architectural decision making, reviewed designs and code, and helped establish engineering standards across the platform.
My Role
I served as a Senior Software Engineer responsible for leading the technical modernization of the platform.
My responsibilities included:
Leading the platform re-architecture
Backend system design
API development
Cloud modernization
Technical planning
Cross-team collaboration
Code reviews
Production support
Technical mentoring
Technical Highlights
Modernized Architecture
Redesigned core application components to reduce complexity and improve maintainability while enabling future feature development.
Scalable APIs
Built and refined backend APIs supporting remote patient monitoring, clinical workflows, and integrations with frontend applications.
Improved Engineering Velocity
Introduced engineering improvements that made the platform easier to maintain, deploy, and extend.
Healthcare Reliability
Executed modernization work without disrupting the platform's critical role in supporting clinicians and patients using remote monitoring across Canadian healthcare organizations.
Results
The modernization effort established a stronger technical foundation for TELUS Home Health Monitoring by:
Reducing architectural complexity
Improving developer productivity
Increasing platform maintainability
Enabling faster delivery of new features
Creating a scalable foundation for future growth
Supporting reliable remote patient monitoring for health authorities and hospitals across Canada
