NMAfA 2026 Biennale Companion (nmafa.app)

What it is. A dedicated mobile-first web app built as the official digital guide for guests attending the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art's (NMAfA) programming at the 61st Venice Biennale (9 May – 22 November 2026, themed "In Minor Keys" under the late Koyo Kouoh). It was developed by Africa.com — NMAfA's official media partner — and was initially built exclusively for the 100 NMAfA guests attending the Biennale preview events, with plans to potentially open it to the public for the rest of the Biennale run. Africa.com
Why it exists. This Biennale is historic for African art: a record 13 African nations are hosting pavilions, including debuts from Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Somalia. The app centers the African Art in Venice Forum (AAVF), a Forum NMAfA co-presents with African Art Dialogues and Strauss & Co during the Biennale's opening week, themed "Beyond Visibility: A Method of Inquiry." Africa.com
What it does. Based on the route map (the site is a single-page app, so most of the content is rendered client-side, but the routes are public), it's a full event-companion platform with these areas:
Exhibitions / Pavilions / PavilionDetail — browse the African national pavilions with detail pages
Artists / ArtistDetail — profiles of participating artists
Schedule — Forum sessions and Biennale-week programming
VeniceMap / Transport / Trattoria — interactive Venice navigation, transport guidance, curated restaurant recommendations
Ambassadors — the 2026 NMAfA Art Ambassadors (curators and scholars like Kevin Dumouchelle, Fola Adenugba, Aindrea Emelife, Dr. Tayler Ava Friar)
Community / CommunityChat / DirectMessages / DirectChat — social layer for member-to-member connection, group chat, and DMs
Announcements — live updates pushed during the event
Gallery, FAQ, Profile, MemberProfile, Privacy — standard companion-app surfaces
Ambassador release form gate — a required release form for the Ambassador role
A complete Admin dashboard (/admin/*) — CRUD panels for pavilions, artists, events, announcements, members, ambassadors, FAQ, tours, trattoria, transport, plus analytics views (itinerary counts, active users, users without profiles)
The pitch in one line. An "African-first" cultural companion — pavilions, artists, Forum sessions and community moments framed through the cultural and historical context that makes this Biennale edition significant, rather than a generic Biennale map. Africa.com
