Andrew Makasini
As the culmination of my graduate capstone project at the University of California, Irvine, I collaborated with a team of accomplished product designers and researchers to tackle pressing challenges within the radiation oncology industry.
Challenge
Our esteemed client, Varian, one of the pioneers in radiation oncology treatment, engaged our team as contracted partners with a paramount mission:
"Uncover a groundbreaking solution capable of significantly reducing treatment time for cancer patients."
A Surprising Find
Our journey began with an eye-opening meeting where Varian presented us with a focus study conducted across their facilities in Switzerland. The study's findings revealed a startling inefficiency in the radiation treatment process. Out of a 16-minute treatment session, a mere 2-3 minutes were devoted to the interaction between clinicians and their patients. This striking revelation meant that a staggering 80-87% of the clinician's time was spent focusing on other tasks away from the patient.
Take a look at what we created as a result of six months of research and design with real clinicians, patients, and experts in the field:
A take-home patient respiration-practice iOS application to practice at home
An enhanced Virtual-Coaching Device inside the treatment room
