THE CHALLENGE

What happens inside a suspension shock-absorber? The aim of this piece was to show the assembly sequence of many small components followed by realistic deformation of a coil spring and movement of oil and air inside a sealed system. The end result should look clean and realistic.

THE WORK

I designed a shock absorber, based on existing designs and technical drawings. All components are life size and realistic in their functionality. Metal shims, valves and adjusters are all shown being assembled in a simulation of a real product.

Making sure the coil spring would move correctly was a challenge in rigging the deformation of the 3D mesh. Showing the movement of oil and air volumes inside the sealed damping chamber was achieved with an x-ray effect.

The actual movement of the shock was driven using an audio recording of a vehicle, translating the sound waves into complex and realistic vibrations into physical movement of the assembly.
Sound effects were added to add interest and realism.
