What’s it Like to Travel Solo in Tokyo, Japan?

Imagine a city where ancient traditions meet modern marvels—welcome to Tokyo.
A vibrant metropolis that offers endless adventures for the curious traveler. As a solo Black woman traveling, I started my journey to this amazing city. I was excited to explore its rich culture and hidden treasures.
Join me as I share my unforgettable experiences in Tokyo!
Let the adventure begin!
Traveling can be one of life’s greatest joys, but packing can often feel daunting.
I remember getting ready for my first solo trip to Tokyo. I stood in my bedroom, surrounded by colorful clothes and travel items. I was trying to fit everything into one suitcase. It wasn't until I embraced minimalist packing that my travels became much more enjoyable.
Embracing Minimalist Packing, The 54321 Method
5 Tops
4 Bottoms
3 Pairs of Shoes
2 Layers
1 Miscellaneous pack
Choosing versatile clothing that could be mixed and matched allowed me to keep my luggage light while maximizing outfit options. Plus, I took pictures of each combination on my phone for easy reference during my travels.
This approach made packing a breeze and allowed me to focus on the adventures ahead.
Tokyo’s Wonders
Upon arrival, I booked a walking tour to see some of the main sites of Tokyo. Our first stop was the iconic Sensō-ji ****Temple in Asakusa—one of the oldest temples in the city.
The atmosphere was electric, filled with visitors eager to soak in its beauty. With every step, I felt the reverence that permeates Japanese culture; it was evident in the way people bowed slightly as they entered the temple grounds.
As I strolled down Nakamise Street, I was tantalized by the array of Japanese foods and unique souvenirs.
From savory mochi to delicate matcha sweets, it felt like a culinary adventure waiting at every stall. I even participated in Omikuji, a traditional Japanese fortune-telling experience that predicts your future.
The excitement of immersing myself in local customs made my heart race with joy.
After visiting Sensō-ji Temple, I hopped on a bus that took me further out into the city.
There, I discovered another serene temple surrounded by tranquil neighborhoods where local residents lived.
The peacefulness was a refreshing contrast to the bustling tourist areas, and it felt like a hidden oasis amidst the city's vibrancy.
Now let’s not forget: safety comes first (Solo Female Travelers).
As a woman sometimes traveling alone can feel daunting, but Tokyo is known for being one of the safest cities in the world.
Here are some safety tips I found helpful during my trip:
Stay Aware: Always be conscious of your surroundings, especially in crowded places.
Use Reliable Transportation: Utilize public transport or trusted rideshare services to navigate the city safely.
Keep Valuables Secure: Use a crossbody bag to keep your belongings close.
Trust Your Instincts: If something doesn’t feel right, don’t hesitate to change your plans.
Later that evening, I returned to my hotel to freshen up before dinner. I treated myself to a meal at a Michelin-starred pizza restaurant in the Makazee area—a culinary experience that did not disappoint!
The highlight of my night was enjoying the breathtaking 350-degree view of Tokyo from the restaurant, which provided a stunning backdrop as the city lights began to twinkle like stars below.
To cap off my adventure, I made my way to the iconic Shibuya Crossing.
Standing at this famous intersection as hundreds of people crossed in unison was exhilarating and surreal—a perfect ending to an unforgettable day.
Embracing solo travel opened up a world of self-discovery for me. Each moment spent exploring Tokyo revealed new layers of my personality and desires. Without distractions from others, I learned to appreciate solitude and embrace spontaneity.
Whether it was navigating public transport or chatting with locals about their favorite spots, each experience taught me something new about the world and myself.
Travelling light and exploring solo has transformed my adventures into something truly special. If you’re considering a trip to Tokyo or anywhere else, I encourage you to embrace minimalist packing and take the plunge into solo travel.
You might just find it leads to unforgettable experiences and profound self-discovery.
So pack that lightweight bag, set your sights on Tokyo, and get ready for an adventure that’s uniquely yours!
