Stack Invest: Invest & Track your Mutual Funds

1. Context & Role

Stack Invest is a platform that makes investing in mutual funds simple, transparent, and goal-driven. It allows users to buy and sell mutual funds seamlessly, track their entire portfolio across platforms in one place, and measure performance using metrics such as XIRR, CAGR, and risk scores. Designed for investors who prefer an execution-first app, Stack Invest provides clarity, control, and transparency throughout the investment journey.

2. The Problem

Once investors pick funds, the real struggle begins:
Fragmented portfolios across Groww, Zerodha, banks, and AMCs
Platforms show only basic returns (CAGR, absolute) → no clarity on true performance
Users don’t know when to exit or if they’re overexposed to certain assets
General DIY platforms → lack personalization, leaving investors confused
This led to anxiety, blind holding, and poor financial decisions.

3. The Goal

Build a platform that brings clarity and confidence to mutual fund investing:
Consolidate portfolios in one place
Provide transparent performance metrics (XIRR, CAGR, risk)
Deliver smart, contextual exit recommendations
Ensure actions are backed by clear reasoning and trust

Process & Challenges

1. Research & Discovery

Conducted user interviews with 20+ investors. Insights:
“I don’t know when to exit. I’m scared of missing out or selling too soon.”
“My funds are spread across apps, and I can’t see the whole picture.”
“Returns shown on apps don’t match what I calculate.”
This made it clear: our job wasn’t just to track, but to guide.
Research shows that 72% of investors continue to hold ELSS funds even after the lock-in period, missing the opportunity to rebalance and reinvest them in ways that could maximize returns while keeping taxation minimal.

2. Design Exploration

Dashboard-first approach: Show at a glance what matters (returns, allocation, top performers, underperformers).
Progressive disclosure: Surface high-level numbers first, allow drilling down into details.
Exit recommendation design: Instead of generic “Sell this fund,” show:
Why → e.g., underperformance vs. benchmark
What next → reinvest options

3. Key Challenges & Solutions

Challenge 1: Exit Confusion

Investors didn’t trust generic sell prompts.
Solution: Crafted Exit Recommendation Screen with bold microcopy, confidence scores, and rationale. Example:

Challenge 2: Data Overload

Users overwhelmed by returns, ratios, metrics.
Solution: Designed hierarchy — portfolio return first, breakdown second, fund-level data last.

Outcome

70% adoption rate of external fund imports in week 1 of launch.
2.5x increase in engagement after launching Exit Recommendations.
Investors reported higher confidence:
“Finally I know why I should exit, not just what to exit.”
“I see my whole portfolio in one screen.”
Internally, Stack Invest became a differentiator vs. Groww/Zerodha, positioning itself as clarity-first, not DIY-first.
“This fund has underperformed 3 years in a row vs. its benchmark. Consider switching to Fund X.”
