Open Source Labs — A nonprofit tech accelerator

BACKGROUND
OSLabs runs under Codesmith, the coding bootcamp, and needed a brand identity built from scratch. There was no existing visual system, just a mission and a growing community of developers and open-source contributors who needed something to rally around. I was brought in to design the whole identity end to end.
THE CHALLENGE
The brand had to live in two worlds at once. On one side, OSLabs is deeply technical and a home for engineers shipping real tools, the kind of place that needs to feel credible in a GitHub README. On the other, it's a nonprofit community trying to bring in sponsors, new contributors, and bootcamp graduates who don't yet think of themselves as "open source people."
It also had to work across a lot of touchpoints from day one: social, event promo, web, print.  And it had to be usable by non-designers inside the org, so the system needed to be flexible enough that the team could stay consistent without needing a designer in the room every time.
THE APPROACH
The logomark fuses the letters O and S into two overlapping circular forms with a deliberate gap, a small nod to the idea of open source itself. For the palette I went with deep purples and magentas, partly to step away from the blue-and-green corner that most developer brands seem to live in, and partly because it still feels grounded and technical without being predictable.
From there I built out the full system: brand guidelines, social templates, event graphics, print and merch artwork, all designed to be reusable. The goal was a kit the team could pick up and run with on their own, without losing the thread.
