Hunchy Hills Distillery — a female-led distillery branding & packaging redesign

BACKGROUND
Hunchy Hills is a small craft gin distillery in the Queensland hinterlands, founded by a woman in her fifties who decided to start something bold in a competitive market. When she came to me, she'd already been through a rough experience with another designer. A big invoice, a generic result, and a brand that felt too masculine for what she was building. She knew exactly what was wrong with it, which made my job easier.
THE CHALLENGE
Australian craft gin is a crowded shelf and most distilleries have had years to build their look. Hunchy Hills was new, starting late, and needed a brand that could hold its own without faking experience it didn't have yet. It had to feel feminine without being soft, and premium without feeling distant.
The packaging made it harder. Some gins are coloured, some are clear, and the liqueurs come in frosted glass. A label that works on a coloured bottle won't work the same way on a clear one, where the artwork becomes visible through the glass. Every bottle needed its own identity, but they all had to feel like the same family.
THE APPROACH
I redesigned the full identity around a new intertwined "H" monogram, then brought in local artist Vanessa Perske to illustrate each gin individually. Her illustrations are vibrant, so a big part of the job was translating that energy into label designs that held up across every bottle type. For the liqueur range, I hand-drew the illustrations myself to keep the family feeling consistent while giving that line its own character.
I built all the bottle renders in Blender so I could test labels across clear, coloured, and frosted surfaces before anything went to print. It saved time, saved money, and meant the founder could see what she was getting before committing.
The range has since picked up Gold and Bronze at the Australian Gin Awards. Those belong to the gin and the founder behind it. But it's a good feeling when the label you designed is on the bottle that wins.
