MathsAI is a web app designed for students in Years 7 and 8 in Australia. It breaks textbook chapters into exercises and questions, with built in explanations, related theory, practice questions and quizzes to help students learn as they go.

The idea

Maths AI was built around a familiar structure. Students could start with a chapter from their maths textbook, work through its exercises and answer questions along the way. But instead of stopping at the question, the experience gave students more ways to learn. They could write an answer, view the solution, read the related theory or generate another question to practice the same concept.
This keeps the experience close to how students already learn from a textbook, while making the practice more interactive.

From chapter to practice

Students start with a chapter and work through its exercises one by one. Each exercise breaks the topic into individual questions, keeping the learning process structured and easy to follow.
For each question, students can enter their answer, check the solution, read the related theory or generate a similar question to practice the same concept.

The exercise didn't end with an answer

A student could enter an answer, but getting it wrong didn't mean the exercise had to stop.
The question screen gave them three ways to continue:

Enter an answer and save it before moving on.

Check the solution

See the intended answer and explanation.

Read the theory

Go back to the concept behind the question.

Practice a variation

Generate another question based on the same concept.

Practice without repeating the same question

After completing an exercise, students could take a timed practice quiz based on the same concepts. The quiz used different values and variations of the questions, so students had to apply what they had learned rather than simply repeat the answers from the exercise.
Each question gave immediate feedback. A correct or incorrect state was shown along with the correct answer and an explanation, helping students understand where they went wrong.

Giving the Client more control

The student experience was only one side of MathsAI. The platform also needed a simple way for the team to create and manage the content behind it.
The admin panel allowed them to manage chapters and exercises, create new questions and choose how each question should work. They could add images, answer options and solutions, reorder questions, hide them or remove them without having to rely on development for every update.

Building a flexible question editor

Different maths problems needed different ways for students to answer. The editor let admins choose the question type first, then configure the content around it.
Questions could be set up as Yes/No, text input or multiple choice, with options to add images, define the correct answer and provide an explanation or solution.
Questions could also be moved within an exercise, hidden when no longer needed or deleted entirely.

Bringing it together

MathsAI connected the learning experience with the tools behind it. Students could move from chapters and exercises to guided practice and quizzes, while the content team could create, update and manage the material without relying on development for every change.
The result was a single platform that supported both sides of the experience, from learning and practice to content creation and management.
