Rota Cisterciense de Portugal — Heritage Meets Modern Design

Maria

Maria Abraão

Rota Cisterciense de Portugal is a national cultural branding project celebrating Portugal’s iconic Cistercian monasteries. The challenge was to create a visual identity that honors the architectural and historical significance of these monuments while remaining modern, flexible, and digital-first 🌐.

The Concept 🎯

The identity is inspired by Gothic ogives, the pointed arches present in all monasteries, forming a visual thread that connects history and design. Each ogive represents one of Portugal’s four main regions, creating a dynamic, modular logo system that balances regional identity and national unity, adaptable across multiple touchpoints 🏞️.

Colors & Typography 🎨✍️

The color palette — royal blue, black, and white — conveys tradition, prestige, clarity, and versatility. Royal blue evokes dignity and heritage, while black and white provide a clean, flexible foundation for digital, print, signage, and merchandise. The typography is modern and legible, designed to complement heritage elements while supporting digital-first applications.

Applications & Impact 🔄🌟

This branding goes beyond aesthetics: it is strategic, adaptable, and culturally resonant. It works across exhibitions, cultural events, digital campaigns, tourist guides, and merchandise, bridging tradition and innovation. The result is a flexible, meaningful identity that inspires pride and connects people to Portugal’s rich Cistercian heritage 🇵🇹.
