Tap, Ride and Transform your Payment Experience

Prunedge - Sierra Leone
2023/2024

Background

Picture a commuter trying to pay for a ride—uncertain if they have enough cash or if their fare will be properly recorded. Meanwhile, the government struggles with collecting fares and managing finances, while a significant portion of revenue gets lost to intermediaries.
Korensi was created to change this. By introducing a digital payment and management platform, it aimed to build a more efficient and secure transportation system, tailored to the needs of Sierra Leone.

Understanding the Challenge

To lay the groundwork for Korensi, our first step was to meet with the government officials who oversee Sierra Leone's transportation sector. These conversations were crucial, providing us with a clear picture of the challenges they face—inefficiencies in fare collection, revenue leakage, and the pressing need for a more robust digital infrastructure.
Their insights guided our approach, ensuring that our solution would address the core issues at the heart of the system. As we dug deeper, it became clear that the core of the problem revolved around ensuring a secure and efficient payment system that could cater to both the government's needs and the commuters' experience.
With these insights in hand, we gained a clearer understanding of the core issues. This led us to refine our focus, ultimately shaping our final design question:

How might we improve transportation payments to secure government revenue and enhance the commuter experience?

Implementation

The development of Korensi involved close collaboration between our design and development teams. Developers translated our designs into a functional, scalable platform, focusing on security and performance. Regular testing ensured a seamless user experience. The result was a robust system ready for launch and future expansion.

Results

The launch of Korensi marked a significant step forward in transforming Sierra Leone's transportation system. Our digital payment and management platform successfully addressed key issues such as revenue leakage and fare collection inefficiencies, resulting in improved financial management for the government. Since the launch, we have received positive feedback from stakeholders, and the platform has shown promising initial results.

Take Aways

Prioritization: We learned the importance of focusing on the most critical issues first, this allowed us to make impactful design decisions.
Iterative Process: The project reinforced the value of an iterative design approach. By continuously refining our solution based on feedback and insights from government officials and guerrilla user testing, we ensured that our final product effectively met the needs of all stakeholders.
Task Sharing: With two Product Design Leads on the team, we emphasized clear communication and division of responsibilities. This collaboration allowed us to leverage each other's strengths and ensure a cohesive and well-rounded design process.

Future Iterations

As we continue to gather feedback from users, we are already exploring how Korensi can be adapted to serve the education and hospitality sectors, further expanding its impact and usability.
