Introduction
The Eshango app is an accounting solution tailored for street traders in Africa. These users often have limited numeracy and literacy skills, making traditional financial tools inaccessible to them. Our mission was to create an app that simplifies accounting processes while ensuring usability for this unique user group.

Accessibility: Eshango is designed to be straightforward and intuitive, even for users with minimal literacy levels.
Restructured Architecture: We revamped the app’s structure to streamline workflows and enhance user flow.
Limited Text Approach: By minimizing text, we catered to users who may struggle with reading.
Gamified Interactions: Engaging interactions were incorporated to boost user retention.
Visual Identity: A friendly brand mascot and thoughtful sound design establish a strong connection between users and the app.
Our goal was to empower street traders with a tool that simplifies their financial management, ultimately contributing to their economic well-being.
Design Process
1. Research and Discovery
We began by immersing ourselves in the world of street traders in Africa. Through interviews, observations, and empathy-building exercises, we gained insights into their daily challenges, needs, and pain points. Understanding their limited literacy and numeracy levels was crucial.

2. Ideation and Wireframing
Armed with research findings, we brainstormed ideas for a simplified accounting app. We focused on minimizing text while maximizing visual cues. Wireframes helped us map out the app’s structure, ensuring a logical flow for users.
3. Prototyping and User Testing
We created interactive prototypes to validate our design decisions. Regular user testing sessions allowed us to iterate and refine the app. Gamified interactions were introduced to enhance engagement and retention.
4. Visual Design and Branding
The Eshango app needed a friendly face. We developed a brand mascot—a relatable character that guided users through the app. Thoughtful sound design complemented the visual elements, creating a cohesive and memorable experience.
Our collaborative efforts resulted in an app that empowers street traders, simplifying their financial management journey while respecting their unique context.

Since the launch of the Eshango app, we’ve witnessed a significant increase in user adoption among street traders. The simplified interface and limited-text approach have made it accessible to even those with low literacy levels.
Gamified interactions, such as earning points for completing financial tasks, have kept users engaged and motivated.
2. Improved Financial Literacy
Street traders who previously struggled with traditional accounting methods now find it easier to manage their finances. The visual cues and intuitive design empower them to track sales, expenses, and profits effortlessly.
Our app has contributed to enhancing financial literacy within this underserved community.
