Initial Proposal

Many consumers have become increasingly conscious of where their everyday products are sourced. Items such as food, clothing and household items are purchased every day. There has been concern regarding where these products are coming from and who consumers may be supporting when purchasing items. Many countries involved in human rights abuse scandals have been subject to product boycotts by everyday consumers, and it is important to recognize that people are concerned for those in other countries. This app will focus on developing a platform where users can learn information on the source of their favourite products, as well as product alternatives that exist from other companies. This app will also give consumers options to input budget plans for them to get the best results when participating in buycotting and boycotting companies they do not morally agree with. In addition to these features, this app will also take into account dietary and religious restrictions that some people may have when shopping. For example, for Muslim and Jewish consumers, there will be filters in place to provide them with halal and kosher options. The same goes for vegan and vegetarian consumers as well, since the app will provide necessary filters for each consumer to use.
The goal of this app is to provide people with more options and information when shopping. Making conscious consumer choices is a crucial step individuals can take to not only abide by their values in life but also push toward a fairer market. With a larger number of people showing concern for where their products come from, a clear message can be sent to companies and other consumers who might begin to see value in caring for the origin of their products. Providing information on product ingredients as well will help consumers understand if they may face any form of harm from purchasing certain chemicals or fabrics. This information will help keep consumers safe in a market where information on materials and ingredients are sometimes unregulated.
While there are apps similar to BuybyValue, such as Buycott, Shopwell, and truvalyou, they only cater to specific social and political issues and personal shopping preferences. BuybyValue is concerned with all three and more, providing a larger catalogue of products for consumers to browse and compare while also ensuring that they maintain their views and beliefs while shopping. When assessing the products based on individuals' values, each product's country of origin, ingredients and manufacturers will be considered when categorizing. Having a single app that does the job of three makes it more convenient for shoppers since they would not need to switch between apps. BuybyValue is more convenient for consumers to maintain their beliefs while shopping.

Target Audience

This app may cater to a larger group of consumers, especially those interested in cautious spending. Spending habits and preserving self-authenticity are crucial points associated with contemporary consumerism. If people are concerned with where their money goes and who it may benefit or hurt, BuybyValue would be a good service for this type of consumer. People interested in buycotting, buying from companies that seemingly act responsibly, or boycotting irresponsible companies, would be interested in this app because there is clear information on products, companies and what these companies stand for and support. With many different types of needs, wants, and values, consumers will be able to structure their shopping trips based on a variety of factors available in the app.

Platform Goal

BuybyValue provides a system that allows consumers to create and maintain ethical shopping choices. This app considers budgetary, diet and regional restrictions, allowing consumers to choose which companies to support without breaking the bank. There are so many products in online and in-store marketplaces, and BuybyValue provides us with an opportunity to sift through these products to find one that aligns with our personal values and lifestyles. The app even has a feature to scan a SKU or barcode so on-the-go, we can assess whether or not this product is right for us. BuybyValue evaluates products based on their chemical components, ingredients, and information on the companies, so we know where our products come from and who is making and manufacturing these things.
The needs-requirements framework used here includes a combination of content analysis and interaction analysis, where we will analyze the needs of consumers in relation to their purchase of items and how the results of the questionnaire provide an opportunity to consider sustainability, honestly and clear information as a part of maintaining consumer satisfaction while shopping.

Core Tasks of the App

Task 1: Create an opportunity to provide transparent information on companies and their ethics.
Task 2: Help users find alternative options to typical corporation products.
Task 3: Help users establish long-lasting habits that encourage ethical customer behaviours.
