Speculative Revival of Waldenbooks, a Beloved US Bookstore Chain
Walden is not a bookstore app. It is a mobile extension of a sanctuary, designed for people who want to read more, focus better, and find community without the noise. The app brings together personalised book recommendations, curated book clubs, workshops, and events within a single, unhurried interface. Every interaction is built around one question: Does this add noise, or does it reduce it?
The Brief
People aren't reading less because they love books less. They're reading less because nothing in their digital environment supports it. The Walden app is the mobile expression of a larger ecosystem built around one idea: Back to Simplicity. The app had to feel as calm as walking into the physical space.

KEY FLOWS
Personalized Onboarding:
The app opens with a question: What are you hoping to get out of Walden? Users select their interests from reading, focus, community, wellness, and the app builds their experience around those choices.

Home: No algorithmic feed
Most apps surface content based on what keeps you engaged. Walden surfaces content based on what you said you cared about when you signed up.

Bookstore: The app mirrors the space
Every visual choice in the app from the color temperature, the spacing, the absence of bottom-tab badges and red notification dots, was made to feel like stepping into the physical Walden. If the space is calm, the app should be calm.

Clubs & Community: Find your people, not just a group
Browse filters let you narrow by genre, location and size but the real filter is the club's identity.

Club Events Registration:
The fully timed agenda appears before the register button. If you know what the evening looks like before you commit, you show up ready. Fewer surprises mean better events for everyone.

Subscription Boxes:
The product photography doesn't show the box. It shows the moment the box is opened. By the time a user reaches the price chip, the experience already feels like something they've had.

Events & Workshops:
Events at Walden aren't just things happening nearby. The browse screen is built to feel like a seasonal programme from a place you'd actually want to spend time photography-first cards, interest filters drawn from your onboarding, and a live weekly view showing the space as somewhere with a rhythm.

Coworking:
Every space card leads with a photo of forest light through floor-to-ceiling windows before listing a single amenity. The Purpose field asks what you're here to do. The Special Request is there because Walden's team will actually read it.
