Irish (Gaeilge) is an endangered language with limited digital learning tools. The client wanted an app that could make learning Irish as engaging and habit-forming as Duolingo — but with cultural depth that generic language apps miss.
Design Approach
The design borrows proven gamification patterns (streaks, XP, levels) but adapts them for a language with unique phonetic and grammatical structures. Cultural context isn't an afterthought — it's embedded in the lesson design.
Key design decisions:
Lesson tree with branching paths: grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and cultural context as parallel tracks
Gamification layer: daily streaks, XP rewards, leaderboards, and achievement badges
Audio-first interaction design for pronunciation exercises (Irish phonetics are notoriously tricky)
Cultural context cards that appear between lessons — connecting language to history, music, and place names
Warm, earthy color palette inspired by the Irish landscape — greens, golds, and stone grays
Progress dashboard with streak tracker and XP history
Cultural context cards and mini-stories
Profile with achievements and learning stats
Leaderboard and social features
What It Solved
A language learning experience that doesn't just teach Irish — it makes you care about Irish. The gamification drives daily habit formation, while the cultural layer gives learners a reason to keep going beyond the XP.
