MatchPro: Building soccer tournament schedules in seconds

About MatchPro is a soccer tournament management platform built together with experienced professionals from the U.S. soccer industry. The idea started with one particularly difficult problem: scheduling.

Creating a tournament schedule may look straightforward from the outside, but once hundreds of teams, coaches, divisions, fields, game requirements and timing restrictions are involved, the number of possible conflicts grows quickly.

A tournament director can spend more than 15 hours manually putting together a two-day schedule and still finish with conflicts that need to be resolved. MatchPro turns that process into one that can take seconds.

The Challenge Tournament scheduling becomes complicated very quickly. A tournament director needs to consider team availability, coach conflicts, rest periods, field restrictions, division rules, game durations and many other constraints at the same time. Moving a single match can easily create a conflict somewhere else in the schedule.

Before we could automate any of this, we had to understand how experienced tournament directors actually build schedules manually. We worked closely with the MatchPro team to break that process down into rules the software could understand and evaluate.

Scheduling was also only one part of the product. MatchPro needed to support the complete tournament lifecycle, including registrations, team management, payments, game cards, scores and the public-facing information used by players, parents and spectators during the event.

The Solution We designed and developed MatchPro from the ground up as a complete SaaS platform for soccer tournament management.

At the center of the product is the automated scheduling engine. It evaluates the tournament's constraints and generates a zero or near-zero conflict schedule in approximately 20 to 90 seconds, depending on the size and complexity of the event. The same process can take an experienced tournament director more than 15 hours to complete manually.

Around the scheduler, we built the full tournament workflow. Directors can create tournaments, configure divisions and registration requirements, set pricing, invite teams, manage registrations, generate schedules, print game cards, enter results and track tournament progress from one place. Clubs and teams have their own experience for creating teams, managing rosters and registering for tournaments, while the public-facing platform allows parents, players and spectators to follow schedules, divisions and scores. We also integrated Stripe Connect to support registration payments and the financial flows behind tournaments, with the platform now supporting transactions at multi-million-dollar scale.
