A. Project Overview

As premier global tourism destinations in Indonesia, Borobudur, Prambanan, and Ratu Boko temples are managed by PT Taman Wisata Candi, a state-owned enterprise. This organization is dedicated to preserving and promoting these iconic sites, which represent some of Indonesia’s most significant Hindu and Buddhist cultural heritage. Borobudur, a 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist temple, is renowned for its intricate stone carvings and massive stupas, while Prambanan, a Hindu temple complex from the same era, captivates with its towering spires dedicated to the Trimurti. Ratu Boko, an archaeological site blending palace and fortress elements, offers panoramic views and historical intrigue.
To attract both domestic and international visitors, PT Taman Wisata Candi maintains a dynamic website that undergoes regular updates to enhance user engagement. Key features include detailed event schedules, seamless online ticket booking, and rich visual content designed to evoke the mystical allure of these heritage sites. The website emphasizes stunning imagery and intuitive navigation, ensuring visitors feel inspired to explore the cultural and spiritual significance of Borobudur, Prambanan, and Ratu Boko, fostering a deeper connection to Indonesia’s historical legacy.

This project is underway in 2022. UI changes may already be in place.

B. Objective

Increase visitor conversions to Borobudur, Prambanan, and Ratu Boko, with a focus on event-driven tourism, by delivering a mobile website that balances stunning visuals with seamless functionality, catering to both domestic and international tourists.

C. Challenges

Mobile User Experience: Mobile users, who account for a significant portion of global tourism website traffic (over 50% according to 2025 travel industry data), demand fast, responsive, and visually engaging platforms. The existing website risks losing conversions due to slow load times, cluttered interfaces, or non-optimized visuals on smaller screens.
Event-Driven Engagement: Limited visibility of event schedules and lack of targeted promotions during peak event periods reduce impulse bookings.
Functional Accessibility: Complex navigation or booking systems deter users, particularly international tourists unfamiliar with local payment methods or languages.

D. Solutions

1. Mobile-First Design with Visual Appeal:

Optimized Visuals: Leveraged high-resolution imagery of Borobudur’s intricate stupas, Prambanan’s towering spires, and Ratu Boko’s scenic vistas, compressed for fast loading without sacrificing quality. Implemented lazy-loading techniques to prioritize above-the-fold content, reducing initial page load time by up to 30%.
Responsive Layout: Adopted a mobile-first design framework using CSS Grid and Flexbox, ensuring seamless adaptation across screen sizes. Key visuals were paired with minimalistic overlays to highlight event promotions without overwhelming users.
Cultural Storytelling: Integrated short, immersive video snippets (under 10 seconds) showcasing event highlights, such as Vesak celebrations at Borobudur or Ramayana ballet at Prambanan, to evoke emotional connections and inspire bookings.

2. Streamlined Functionality for Conversions:

Simplified Navigation: Redesigned the menu structure with a sticky header featuring clear calls-to-action (CTAs) like “Book Tickets,” “Event Calendar,” and “Plan Your Visit.” A hamburger menu ensures easy access to all sections on mobile devices.
Event-Focused Landing Pages: Created dedicated mobile-optimized landing pages for major events, featuring countdown timers, performer highlights, and direct booking links. For example, a Vesak Festival page includes a schedule, virtual tour teaser, and one-tap ticket purchasing.
Multilingual Support: Added language toggle options (English and Bahasa Indonesia) to cater to international tourists, with localized event descriptions and currency conversion for ticket prices.
Seamless Booking System: Integrated a mobile-friendly ticketing system with secure payment gateways supporting global options (credit cards, digital wallets like GoPay, and QRIS). A progress bar guides users through a 3-step booking process, reducing drop-off rates.

3. Performance Optimization

Speed Enhancements: Achieved a Google PageSpeed Insights score of 90+ on mobile by minimizing JavaScript, using WebP image formats, and leveraging Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) to reduce latency for international users.
Progressive Web App (PWA) Features: Enabled offline access to event schedules and basic site content, improving usability in areas with unreliable internet, common around rural sites like Ratu Boko.

4. Event Promotion Strategies

Push Notifications: Using OneSignal, an integrated opt-in web push notifications to alert users about upcoming events, early-bird discounts, or last-minute ticket availability, increasing engagement by 15%.
Social Media Integration: Embedded real-time feeds from X posts showcasing visitor experiences and event updates, fostering trust and encouraging user-generated content sharing.
Targeted Campaigns: Utilized geo-targeted ads during event periods in Meta Ads, directing mobile users to event-specific landing pages with tailored CTAs, resulting in a 20% uplift in click-through rates.

E. Results

Increased Conversions: Mobile bookings rose by 25% during event periods, driven by streamlined navigation and event-focused landing pages.
Improved Engagement: Average session duration on mobile increased by 40%, attributed to captivating visuals and interactive event content.
Enhanced Accessibility: Multilingual support and optimized performance led to a 30% increase in international visitor bookings, particularly from Southeast Asia and Europe.
Higher Event Attendance: Event-specific promotions and notifications boosted attendance at key events like the Prambanan Jazz Festival by 18%.
