In skateboarding, a no-comply 180 used to be referred to as a ‘43,’ whose origins are still a little lost on me despite having skated a solid chunk of my life.
Because of this, No-Comply Skateshop often uses the number 43 in their marketing, such as referring to themselves as 43ers (a play on the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team). This year, I worked with co-owner and head creative Grant Jensen to animate a clip of him doing a no-comply 180 to promote their April 3rd (or 4/3 Day) sale they had.
To create this animation, I reduced the framerate of the footage to 12 frames per second and imported the video into Procreate. Redrawing each frame by hand, about 40 in total, I then exported it as a PNG sequence to composite in After Effects.
A rotoscoped animation created for No-Comply Skateshop to promote their 4/3 Day Sale.
Inspiration taken from the no-comply 180 trick formerly being called a 43.
