SOS Climate Code Red: Sustainkita's programme in empowering youths to collectively reduce global carbon emission 🌳 About the Project

SOS Climate Code Red was a programme to equip and empower youths with the tools and knowledge needed to foster collective, sustainable climate actions. The program consisted of a series of webinar and workshop, and youths was provided with a groundbreaking tool, PawXero --a personal carbon calculator built by the team supported by the University of Edinburgh Student Experience Grants and WWF Eco Champion Awards.

🌳 My Responsibility

I was undertaking the role of Research and Content Development Co-Lead where I was in charge to research and develop not only the content, but also the engaging visuals, team working with the Digital Marketing team.
Content Research
In our 3rd webinar, for example, we brought in two perspectives across ASEAN: Sungai Watch (Indonesia) and Zero Waste Malaysia. I was trusted to do research on Sungai Watch, Indonesian NGO based in Bali concerned in waste management and EPR. In the process of transforming what I'd researched into on-point panel questions I learned more on how to ask the right question and dig beyond the surface to find the root cause of the issue, so we can actually move toward action.
I developed about 11 high-level questions which further derived to a more elaborated discussion. This is a glimpse of what I worked on in this particular role.

Content Design and Digital Marketing
Alongside researching and developing content, my main role also covered designing visuals and digital content for our social media platforms. These are some samples of graphic designs I've created throughout the programme.

One of my first tasks after joining the team was to design a comprehensive programme booklet for participants. It involved balancing creative visual with factual accuracy to depict real-world disaster situations through pictures, illustrations and graphics.
For the programme launch, I initiated a sequential background design for Instagram to emphasise the subsequent posts were part of the programme’s series. I am very grateful that the Co-Founder and our Digital Marketing supervisor welcomed this idea, giving me the creative freedom to adapt each post's design while effectively integrating the information that needed to be delivered

For the webinars which covered topics ranging from climate change and renewable energy to sustainable waste management, I developed these posters with professional, engaging visuals and concise, yet accessible copywriting, aligning with the Co-Founder vision.

PawXero Development
Beside my main role, I also took the opportunity to join the PawXero Development Team. PawXero is a youth-led collaboration supported by WWF Malaysia and The University of Edinburgh, providing youth with a handy tool to measure, track, and reduce their carbon footprints.
I was responsible for translating the calculator for the Malaysian context, ensuring it was accessible and relevant for local users. It's incredible to see our team's journey started from only the Excel dashboard version to the web-app version now available at the link below.

🌳 Challenge

Throughout my time in Sustainkita and particularly in this programme, I gracefully embraced every challenge coming my way. Meaning, instead of seeing it as obstacles, I took it as an opportunity to learn especially on how to translate and adapt the information, methods, and purposes we try to deliver to a real-life target community.
For instance, there's significant difference between designing Instagram posts aimed to youths in general and webinar posters that involved respected experts. With a very supportive team and supervisor, I gained a lot of lesson and hacks to tackle this challenge such as tailoring color palette strategy and the power of punching headlines.
