Dear supporter,
This year, COVID-19 has been on the minds of people living around the world. On March 13th, Kenya confirmed its first case, and two days later, the government implemented several measures to slow the spread of disease, like closing schools and banning social gatherings.
While these measures helped to keep people safe, they unfortunately also hurt the livelihoods of many vulnerable members of society, including Debra*, a former client who received a steady income and was self-reliant before the pandemic. She shared with us that her worst fears were coming true because she was now unable to feed her children after her business collapsed. Many others reached out with concerns about feeding their families, paying rent, and separating rumors about COVID-19 from facts.
Thanks to your support, we were able to respond to these needs. Since early March, we have distributed over 7,000 food baskets, disbursed $28,400 in rent support to ensure 915 refugees had a roof over their heads, and delivered prescription drugs to over 200 clients across Nairobi. We also increased efforts to raise awareness of COVID-19 by sending out bulk SMS messages to approximately 5,000 refugees each month and provided soap and portable hand-washing stations to stop the spread of the virus.
Due to the pandemic's rapidly changing situation, refugee-serving organizations stretched to fill gaps in humanitarian response to serve those most at-risk. Luckily, because of the private funding that you so generously support us with, we were able to meet refugees' needs as they emerged.
On behalf of the thousands of refugees whose lives your support impacts so positively and the entire team, I say "Asante Sana" (thank you very much) for supporting our work. Together we can continue to ensure that refugees are able to keep their loved ones safe, put food on the table, keep their children in school, and maintain hope for a brighter future.
