Philosophy: Learning Spanish with La Rochefoucauld (2010)

This post (originally written in Valparaiso, Chile, in the Austral winter of 2010) contains not my original words, but rather the words of 17th century French philosopher François de La Rochefoucauld. Actually, they are the translated words of La Rochefoucauld into both English and Spanish, not the original French. The English translation was provided by J. Willis Bund and J. Hain Friswell (published in 1871), and the Spanish translation was from various sources, but more often than not from an 1824 French translation into Spanish by Don Narciso Alvaro y Zereza (under the editorial direction of Jose Rene Masson of the publishing house Masson and Sons in 1824).
Why my interest in La Rouchefoucauld? Part of it has to do with family history. Recently, someone had researched a root of my family tree back to France, to a Huguenot emigre named Gedeon "La Plante" Merlet, who was subordinate at one time before leaving France to one of the philosopher’s relatives in the Champagne-region town of Roucy. That got me interested in La Rochefoucauld’s writing, which featured the sort of collection of sayings to which I could relate.
I had built this list into an Excel spreadsheet to try to learn Spanish. As I said, La Rouchefoucauld’s Maxims are bite-sized pieces of wisdom that seemed useful in learning the vocabulary needed to express the sorts of things I’d likely say, or at least want to say. (Well, other than maybe the maxims on women, which are clearly from a whole other era.) Both versions - English and Spanish - are available for free online, but without matching maxim-to-maxim in the two languages. That’s why I felt this should be posted. Hopefully, others will find this useful.

Some may be found whose courage is strengthened by small perils, which prepare them to face greater dangers. Some will dare a sword cut but flinch from a bullet; others dread bullets little but fear to fight with swords. These varied kinds of courage share this in common: in darkness, by increasing fear and concealing gallant and cowardly actions alike, men choose to consider their own safety instead. There is yet another and more general cautiousness; no man exists who would do all he could if he were certain of escaping with his life. It is thus certain that the fear of death does somewhat subtract from valor.

Thus the dead are honored by tears shed for the living alone. I call this a kind of hypocrisy because in afflictions of this sort, we deceive ourselves. There is another kind of hypocrisy, less innocent because it is aimed at the world at large: the grief of those who aspire to the glory of a noble and immortal sorrow. Time, the universal destroyer, has obliterated the real sorrow they had, but they still obstinately shed tears, sigh, and wail; they wear solemn faces and try to persuade others that their grief will end only with their life. This miserable and tiring vanity is usually found in ambitious women, for as their sex closes to them all paths to glory they strive to render themselves celebrated by showing an inconsolable affliction. There is yet another kind of tears arising from shallow springs that flow and dry at will; people shed these sorts of tears to achieve a reputation for tenderness to be pitied or wept over, or finally to avoid the disgrace of not weeping!

Thus it ultimately happens that having scorned death when they were ignorant of it, they fear it when they become acquainted with it. If we could avoid seeing it with all its surroundings, we might perhaps believe that it was not the greatest of evils. The wisest and bravest are those who find the least shameful means to avoid reflecting on it, as every man who sees it in its real light regards it as fearful. The inevitability of dying creates all the constancy of philosophers, who believed in traveling with good grace along a road that they could not avoid. Being unable to prolong their lives indefinitely, they stopped at nothing to build an immortal reputation and to save from the general wreck all that could be saved. To put a good face upon it, let us be content not to admit to ourselves all that we think about it, but rely more on our nature than on our fallible reason, which might make us think we could approach death with indifference. The glory of dying with courage, the hope of being regretted, the desire to leave behind us a good reputation, the assurance of being set free from the miseries of life, and being no longer dependent on the whims of fortune, are remedies that should not be passed over. But we must not regard them as infallible. They should affect us in the same proportion as a single hedge affects those who in war storm a fortress; at a distance they think it may afford cover, but when near they find it only a feeble protection. It is only deceiving ourselves to imagine that death, when near, will seem the same as at a distance, or that our feelings, which are merely weaknesses, are naturally so strong that they will not be daunted by the toughest of trials. It is equally as absurd to try the effect of self-esteem and to think it will enable us to count as naught what will of necessity destroy it; the mind in which we trust to find so many resources will be far too weak in the struggle to persuade us in the way we wish. For it is this which betrays us so frequently, and which, instead of filling us with contempt of death, serves but to show us all that is frightful and fearful. The most it can do for us is to persuade us to avert our gaze and fix it on other objects. Cato and Brutus each chose glorious things to contemplate, but not so long ago a lackey contented himself by dancing on the scaffold when he was about to be broken on the wheel. So however diverse the motives they but realize the same result, and it is also true that whatever difference there may be between the peer and the peasant, we have constantly seen both the one and the other meet death with the same composure. Still, there is always this difference: the contempt the great man shows for death is but the love of fame which hides death from his sight; in the peasant it is but the result of his limited vision that hides from him the extent of the evil and leaves him free to reflect on other things.

It never pauses for rest outside the self, and only rests upon other subjects as a bee upon flowers, to extract from them its proper food. Nothing is so headstrong as its desires, nothing so well concealed as its designs, nothing so devious as its methods; its suppleness is beyond description; its transformations surpass those of the metamorphoses, its complexities go beyond chemistry. We can neither plumb the depths nor pierce the shades of its recesses in which, hidden from the sharpest eyes, it takes a thousand imperceptible twists and turns, and is often invisible even to itself and unknowingly conceives, nourishes and brings up a vast brood of affections and hatreds. Some of these are so monstrous that when they are brought to light it hesitates to own or outright disowns them. From the enveloping darkness come the ludicrous ideas it has about its own nature, its errors, its ignorance, its silly mistakes. It leads itself to believe that its passions which sleep are dead and to think that it has lost all appetite for that of which it is sated. But this thick darkness that conceals it from itself does not hinder it from seeing perfectly that which is out of itself, just as our eyes behold all, and yet cannot see our own self. In fact, in great concerns and important matters when the violence of its desires summons all its attention, it sees, feels, hears, imagines, suspects, penetrates, and divines all, and one is tempted to believe that each of its passions has a magic power proper to it. Nothing is so close and strong as its attachments, which, in sight of the extreme misfortunes which threaten it, it vainly attempts to loosen their hold. Yet sometimes, without any trouble or delay, it can do things that it failed to do with its whole power for years. From all this, we may reasonably conclude that its desires are inflamed by itself alone, rather than by the beauty and value of its objective, which is given its price and luster by its tastes alone. When it pursues things that are to its liking it is running after itself, for that is really what it likes. It is made up of all the opposites: it is domineering and obedient, sincere and deceitful, merciful and cruel, timid and daring. Its inclinations vary with the varying temperaments that bend its energies now toward glory, now toward riches, now toward pleasures. It changes according to our age, our fortunes, and our hopes; it is quite indifferent whether it has many or one desire, because it can split itself into many portions, and unite in one as it pleases. It is inconstant, for apart from changes resulting from outside causes, countless others are arising from within itself. It is inconstant through inconstancy, shallowness, love, thirst for novelty, weariness, or satiety. It is capricious, and at times you can see it work with intense eagerness and incredible labor to obtain things of little use to it, or which are even harmful, but which it pursues because it wishes for them. It is silly, and often throws its whole energy on the utmost frivolities. It finds all its pleasure in the most vapid matters and places its pride in the most contemptible. It is seen in all stages of life, and in all conditions; it lives everywhere and upon everything; it subsists on nothing; it accommodates itself either to things or to the want of them; it goes over to those who are at war with it, enters into their designs, and, this is wonderful, it, with them, hates even itself. It conspires for its own loss, it works towards its own ruin, caring only to exist, and providing that it may be, it will be its own enemy! We must therefore not be surprised if it is sometimes to the rigorest austerity enters brazenly into partnership toward its own destruction, for the moment of its defeat on one side is that of recovery on the other. When you think it has given up what it enjoys, it is merely calling a temporary halt or ringing the changes, and at the very time that it is vanquished and you think you are rid of it, back it comes, triumphant in its own undoing. Such is the picture of self-love, whose whole existence is but one long agitation. It may be fittingly likened to the sea, the ebb and flow of whose unceasing waves there is a faithful picture of the stormy succession of its thoughts and its eternal restlessness.
