Isabel is building their profile!

Anybody looking for their next role in a media/entertainment related field needs a digital portfolio for employers to view their work. However, not everyone knows how to build a website. My mother threw together a portfolio on WordPress to represent her career in travel journalism, but the site was difficult to navigate and lacked a clear UI structure. Using the PDFs she sent me, I established categories (articles, book, press, and photos) and completely redesigned the site on WIX. I chose a serif typeface to give it a news article feel, and put a ripple effect on the paragraphs to keep the viewer's attention when scrolling through long articles.

Cover image for How to illustrate a negative
How to illustrate a negative thought spiral? They can be like rain coming down fast in large, uncontrollable quantities. They can be heavy, and stay chained to the mind. In this cover illustration, the subject experiences heavy thoughts raining down as chains from her mind's thought bubble. This is used to explain the issue the booklet "Over the Abyss" addresses, as it explains cognitive behavioral therapy treatment in an understanding and empathetic tone.

Cover image for Change the hand you were
Change the hand you were dealt, and your future is yours. This is a poster advertisement for the brand "Athena," a financial literacy initiative targeted towards young women. An ad like this might be seen in a coffee shop, library, or university bus station where young women are found. The large type is seen first, and the need for financial prosperity will inspire them to come a bit closer to read about the program. At the bottom is a QR code link to the website and boilerplate text.

Cover image for Imagine... you're with your friends,
Imagine... you're with your friends, heading to a club party. It's late May, and it's started to be warm and sunny out every day. Before you enter a chaotic room full of young people, there's a quiet moment where you see this display and it lets you know you're in the right place. Does it make your heart beat a little faster with anticipation? The viewer gets a sense of uncovering the text through the large tropical leaves, same as they're uncovering and transitioning into the club space. (p.s. I designed this in Canva reusing elements, these are not original illustrations!)

Cover image for School shootings have remained a
School shootings have remained a threat to students' sense of safety for years in America. That's why I screen-printed this postcard, "Unlock the Shadow of Violence," where the imagined silhouette of a rifle lurks over a row of lockers. As stated on the back of the card: "Nearly half of all parents with a gun in the home wrongly believe their children don't know where it is stored. An estimated 4.6 million American children live in a home where at least one gun is kept loaded and unlocked. These improperly stored weapons have contributed to school shootings and suicides. (source: https://www.edweek.org/) Tragedies can be prevented through both the secure storage of firearms and advocacy for changes in gun control laws. American children deserve to feel safe in their place of education, and not live in fear of lockdown."

Cover image for Explore the Timeless Beauty of Caslon and Classic Serifs
I've always taken a liking to old-style serif typefaces for their detail and beauty. For example, "Caslon" by William Caslon was released in 1722 from a type press, which is the basis for the digital font Adobe Caslon. In this spread, I describe the history of the typeface and compare its shapes to other serif typefaces like Garamond, Bembo, and Didot. I've placed the information on an image of old, stained coffee paper created in Photoshop. Comment your favorite typeface below🙌

Cover image for Here is the cover to
Here is the cover to a travel guide of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. To create the cover image, I combined two photos in Photoshop. One is an original photo I took of the Nauset Beach Lighthouse, recognizable as the logo for Cape Cod potato chips. After isolating the lighthouse and deepening its red saturation, I placed it over a photo I downloaded from https://unsplash.com/ (https://unsplash.com/). Finally, I added the lockup and the fish.😊

Cover image for Young girls are struggling with
Young girls are struggling with body dysmorphia due to social media. Makeup can, in some cases, mask insecurities while self-love is in process. "Mirror, Mirror" is a vibrant magazine that explores various makeup trends and looks, targeted at 12 to 14-year-old girls. For this interior spread, I designed the layout for an article from the H&MUA studio (left) and L'Oréal (right). Each article describes a unique makeup look to try out: a 1960s trend, featuring 60s model Twiggy and others, and a glam look, featuring Barbara Palvin. (p.s. the background of this mockup is the hex code of a foundation shade...)

These sticker illustrations were custom drawn for another event at the George Washington University. My team hosted a roller skating party as an orientation event for incoming freshmen to meet one another, and decided on an 80s dance party theme. Given that brief and a Pinterest board created by one of my co-workers, I come up with this 80s color palette and made illustrations that provoked the dizzy feeling of skating around in circles!

Cover image for "Athena" is a financial literacy
"Athena" is a financial literacy service for adolescent women, particularly those in college or graduates who are new to managing their money. The brand allows women to see themselves in the image of the Greek Goddess Athena, the goddess of war who fought with wisdom and rationality. The brand mark looks like a small coin, resembling Athena's shield. She commonly wore white and gold, and these colors also reflect a lifestyle of elegance and wealth.

Cover image for I've found it interesting how
I've found it interesting how people struggling with mental health disorders have such an outstandingly different culture from the people who are supposed to help them. A clinical psychiatrist in a white coat is meant to treat patients who find more connection with an edgy music artist like Lil Peep. I thought about bridging this gap through design, by communicating theories like Dialectical Behavioral Therapy in a mood much more familiar and intimate to the patient. This booklet explains cognitive distortions while keeping a somber tone. It's supposed to feel the same as listening to a sad song when you're sad.

Cover image for Here is a museum poster
Here is a museum poster ad for an exhibition on pop art and comic history. It features cutouts of some of comic's most iconic characters in history, starting with Tillie the Toiler from the 1920s (top right) going all the way to contemporary manga characters. The poster is also laid out to mimic a comic book or graphic novel page, against a pop art inspired color palette.

Cover image for The George Washington University has
The George Washington University has an annual awards event called "The Excellence in Student Life Awards" to honor students and staff who have impacted the community. I was tasked with designing a brand and campaign across print and digital media to encourage everyone at GW to submit nominations for their peers and professors. Against the GW navy blue brand color, I illustrated a cherry blossom flower, a hallmark of Washington DC in the spring. It appears in the shape of a star to symbolize "excellence!"
