Around 1600, Japanese artists painted Nanban folding screens depicting for the first time the arrival of Western ships and visitors, observing their unfamiliar clothes, belongings and customs from a local perspective. Four centuries later, the ships are bigger, the luggage has wheels, and everyone carries a camera. Using a public-domain Nanban reference from the Cleveland Museum of Art, I created a custom Recraft Style and brought that historical gaze into the age of mass tourism. A Grand Tour of Everyone Else’s Home follows contemporary visitors through seven painted scenes, turning rolling suitcases into grand processions and raised smartphones into the spectacle itself. The series gently reverses the tourist gaze: we arrive to look at a place, while the people who live there look back at us.
